NIPER Hyderabad is an Indian public Pharmacy research university, and a part of the seven schools, under India's Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The institute offers Masters and Doctoral degrees in pharmaceutical sciences. As an Institute of National Importance it plays an important role in the Human Resource Development for the ever growing Indian Pharmaceutical industry, which has been in the forefront of India’s science based industries with wide ranging capabilities in this important field of drug manufacture.[1][2]
The institute offers a 2-year PG degree course; MS (Pharm.) in 4 disciplines ( Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Analysis & Pharmaceutics) and is located at the former R&D Centre of IDPL, Balangar, Hyderabad. Presently, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad a premier CSIR Research Laboratories, is the Mentor Institute for NIPER, Hyderabad.[3]
Other NIPERs
The institutes run with co-operation from mentor institutes located at the respective places.
Other NIPER's with their mentor institutes are:
- NIPER Mohali (Punjab).
- NIPER Ahmedabad (Gujarat). Mentor institute: B. V. Patel PERD Centre (PERD).
- NIPER Hajipur (Bihar). Mentor institute: RMRIMS, Patna.
- NIPER Kolkata (West Bengal). Mentor institute: IICB Kolkata.
- NIPER Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh). Mentor institute: CDRI Lucknow.
- NIPER Guwahati (Assam). Mentor institute: GMCH Guwahati.
However, counseling for these institutes are held at NIPER, SAS nagar (Mohali), Punjab.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals has envisaged an investment Rs 3,000 crore to set up ten more National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) over the next five years in to enhance availability of skilled human resources in the pharma sector.
The proposal to set up ten additional NIPERs is one of the many proposals, worth Rs 12,280 crore, that have been submitted to the Planning Commission by the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) under the 12th Five Year Plan.
Library and Information Centre
The library at NIPER-Hyderabad is being developed in a manner that it can eventually gain the status of National Library and Information Centre on Pharmaceutical Sciences. A beginning has been made with the subscription of 6 International and 9 National journals. The library has Chemical Abstracts from 1963 to 1983 and Cumulative Indices up to eleventh bound volumes. A number of CD-ROM databases such as International Pharmaceutical Abstracts and Drug Information Full Text (1963-1998 Scifinder-Scholar online bibliographic database for Chemical Abstracts also available. The library is accessible to all the Pharmacy professionals from the country information to the academia, Researchers and the industry personnel. The library has obtained institutional membership of IICT-Library.
At present NIPER-Hyderabad belongs to 400 Books for three disciplines which are M.S. (Pharm) in Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Pharmacology & Toxicology. Library possesses 14750 Books belongs to Old IDPL R & D Centre, 1500 bound volumes of journals and Chemical Abstracts & Biological Abstracts.
Research
The institute offers education and research facilities in area of three pharmaceutical disciplines
