Mexican Protected Natural Areas

Mexico's Protected Natural Areas are 158 designated "Natural Areas" in Mexico, representing 11% of the nation's surface area, and are protected and administrated by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, or CONANP), a federal agency. CONANP administrates:

• 67 Mexican National Parks

• 35 Mexican Biosphere Reserves

• 29 Mexican Protected Flora & Fauna Areas

• 17 Mexican Nature Sanctuaries

• 6 Mexican Protected Natural Resource Areas

• 4 Mexican Natural Monuments
