Nandail (Bengali: নান্দাইল) is an Upazila of Mymensingh District[1] in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. It is about 46 kilometers from Mymensing town.

Geography

Nandail is located at 24°34′00″N 90°41′00″E / 24.5667°N 90.6833°E / 24.5667; 90.6833 . It has 62533 households and total area 326.13 km². is bounded by Ishwarganj upazila on the north, Hossainpur and Kishoreganj sadar upazilas on the south, Kendua and Tarail upazilas on the east, Trishal and Gaffargaon upazilas on the west. Old Brahmaputra and Narasunda rivers are almost dead; Noted depressions are Talar Kur, Zilla Beel, Hamai Beel, Aralia Beel, Balda Beel, Bapail beel and Tongi Beel.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Nandail has a population of 328,847. Males constitute 50.82% of the population, and females 49.18%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 155930. Nandail has an average literacy rate of 22.3% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[2]

Administration

Administration Nandail thana established on 18 January 1912 and Nandail Upazila was established on 15 December 1982. Nandail has 1 Pouroshova, 12 Unions, 163 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 273 villages.Nandail Pouroshova consists of 9 wards and 20 mahallas. The area of the Pouroshova is 13.05 km2. Historical events and Liberation War

The love story of the dramatic epic Malua (Malua Pala) of the Mymensingh Gitika (ballads) belongs to Nandail. Muazzmabad (now Muazzampur) was the Administrative headquarters of East Bengal during the reign of Alauddin Hussain Shah. In the eighteenth century when the British established Neel Kuthi (indigo centre) at Razbari Bazar of Nandail Indigo Revolt started in the area. On 21 April 1971 the Pakistan army killed 18 persons and burned few hundred houses of Rajgati, Shuvokhila and Kaliganj areas. On 17 November 1971 total 27 freedom fighters including Illias Uddin Bhuiyan, Shamsul Haque, Zillul Baki, Thana Awami League president Shahnewaz Bhuiyan were killed in a battle with the Pakistan occupation army. This day is being observed as the "Nandail Shaheed Day". There are three awarded freedom fighters at Nandail Upazila, they are Abdus Salam Bhuiyan(BIR PROTIK,বীর প্রতীক), Anisul Haque Sanju(BIR PROTIK,বীর প্রতীক), Abdul Zbbar(BIR PROTIK,বীর প্রতীক).The veteran student leader of Language movement Mr. Khaleque Nawaz Khan was born in Nandail. He was the founder General Secretary of the then East Pakistan Chatra League who defeated incumbent prime minister of the then East Pakistan Mr. Nurul Amin in 1954 jukto front election and in that election Muslim league was wiped out from political landscape of East Bengal. Mr. Khaleque Nawaz Khan was awarded Ekushy Padak after almost 4 decades of his death.

Colleges 5, government high school 1, non-government high school 35, madrasa 241, government primary school 115, non-government primary school 63. Noted educational institutions: Chandipasha Government High School (1915), which was established by among others prominent local benevolent personality Qazi Nawab Ali, was proud to have students like former president of the republic of Bangladesh, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, language movement hero and veteran student leader and politician the late Khaleque Nawaz Khan who passed Matriculation from this school. Shaheed Smriti Adarsha College is also a notable institution which was established by former Governor of Mymensingh District, the late Rafique Uddin Bhuiyan.

Economy

The main characteristic of Nandail Upazila economy is an agriculture-based economy. Main occupations are: agriculture 64.14%, forestry and fishing 1.03%, agricultural labourer 16.9%, wage labourer 1.82%, commerce 6.19%, service 2.43%, others 7.49%. Land use Cultivable land 24110 hectares, fallow land 8605.83 hectares; single crop 10.05%, double crop 55.58% and treble crop land 34.37%; cultivable land under irrigation 46%.Land control Among the peasants 15.3% are landless, 26.42% marginal, 36.85% small, 17.42% intermediate and 4.01% rich.The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk. 5000 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops are Paddy, jute, wheat, potato, aubergine and patal. Extinct and nearly extinct crops Nazirshail paddy, kesari and kalai. Manufactories Flour mill 54, textile mill 1, boiler 7. Cottage industries Weaving 2, bamboo work 309, goldsmith 35, blacksmith 53, potteries 42, wood work 185, tailoring 208 and welding 40.
