NYU Tandon Online, formerly known as NYU-ePoly, is the online learning department for higher education at New York University Tandon School of Engineering.[1] Focusing primarily on technology, science and engineering degrees, NYU Tandon Online allows individuals to pursue a degree virtually from any corner of the globe.

The vision of NYU Tandon Online is to provide the same world renowned on-campus education, online by eliminating all geographical, physical and temporal barriers. Students are provided 24x7 access to education, with the help of sophisticated online learning technology which provides the students with the exact same degree as given on-campus. The university provides online education in both formats, asynchronous and synchronous and encourages peer-to-peer engagement throughout the academic semester. On-campus students are allowed to register for online courses, allowing online students to connect further with the Metrotech campus community.

Currently, the School of Engineering offers 16 graduate level programs online, including 8 master’s degrees, 2 advance certificates and 6 certificates of completion. The university also offers a handful of undergraduate online courses.

Mission

NYU Tandon Online provides global, flexible online education in engineering, science and technology to create industry experts who will impact the nation, and the world. We achieve this by carrying on the New York University Tandon School of Engineering tradition of i2e (invention, innovation and entrepreneurship).[2] Armed with the tools, resources and inspiration, faculty and students can turn their research into concrete applications, products and services. The online community allows for worldwide collaboration, allowing even the most remote student to be an integral part of the NYU community.

History

The “e-Poly” story began back in 2006, as the online learning wing of the then Polytechnic University. The department was initially designed for its on-campus students to blend and accelerate their time to degree completion by taking some courses online. The first program offered entirely online was the Cybersecurity Master’s Degree. By 2009, e-Poly program offerings included 3 master’s degrees and 2 advance certificates. In 2009, e-Poly was renamed NYU-ePoly, in recognition of the university’s affiliation with NYU. Following the School's name change in October, 2015, the department was renamed NYU Tandon Online. As growth remains constant, today NYU Tandon Online offers over 65 online courses in diverse technology and management fields. As NYU Tandon School of Engineering stands today as one of the 18 schools of New York University, NYU Tandon Online enjoys the status of a fully functional online learning division at NYU.[3]

Academics

Modes of Instruction

NYU Tandon Online makes use of the latest technologies available to deliver the course material. Three most-used modes of instructions are:

Technologies in Use

NYU Tandon Online uses the most current and effective technologies in online learning to make the learning experience better and more satisfying. An example of this is the migration of Learning Management System at the School of Engineering to the NYU Classes powered by Sakai open-source collaborative learning environment.

Live Stream is another cutting edge technology employed to help students gain access to the live lectures in classroom. Live Virtual Learning is delivered using this platform.[4]

One of the major challenges associated with online learning is conducting examinations online. To tackle this challenge, NYU Tandon Online is partnered with the proctoring service, ProctorU, to help students all over the world overcome the final hurdle in delivering a course completely online. Guidelines, structure, and information on proctoring are provided by NYU Tandon Online for the students benefits. Examinations for some majors that are math heavy still require a paper exam, such as Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. For these programs, remote proctoring instructions are provided along with a recommendation to visit the National College Testing Association Database for a list of approved proctors. Taking an online degree requires due-diligence on the student's part when it comes to time management, self-discipline, and coordinating with professors and classmates. NYU Tandon Online ensures that students are provided with enough information regarding all aspects of online learning to successfully complete an online degree. [5]

Visiting Students

Apart from the regular Master’s and Certificate programs, NYU Tandon Online also allows individuals to take up to 3 online courses at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, without formally applying for admissions. This option is especially beneficial for students who want to learn an advanced topic for personal and professional development.[6]

Full-time vs Part-time

Staying true to its goal of allowing students to set their own pace, NYU Tandon Online offers both full-time and part-time enrollment. While full-time programs requires complete engagement of a student’s time and effort throughout the semester, part-time programs aim to create an equilibrium between the academic program and other priorities that a student might have. Ideally, part-time programs are more suited to individuals who want to finish their Master’s/Certificate programs over a long period of time while retaining their full-time jobs.

Board

Chaired by the Dean Katepalli Sreenivasan, NYU Tandon Online has a vibrant Board composed of prominent members from different academic and administrative divisions of New York University. The mission of the Board is to oversee and provide faculty review of the management, improvement and growth of online learning at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. The Board meets twice a year to oversee the growth, approve plans and provide general governance of online learning. The Board, since its inception has approved a number of new initiatives in technology and pedagogy, including Live Virtual Learning, Active Learning, remote proctoring and potential new online learning programs.[7]

Enterprise Learning

The Enterprise learning program runs in conjunction with NYU Tandon Online and is designed to meet the complex needs of large organizations worldwide. The School of Engineering helps align learning to the company goals and objectives. With NYU Tandon Online, this objective is met by helping employees learn from anywhere in the world, according to their convenience, while retaining their full-time jobs.[8]

The Enterprise Learning team has partnered with a large number of Societies and Corporate Organizations, thus helping their members and employees get exclusive corporate discounts and rebates.
