Story

Prologue

400 years ago, a group of aliens came to survey Earth upon ancient Korean times (Joseon era). However, things didn’t go as planned as one of them became lost and separated from the group. The alien known as Do Min-Joon (Kim Soo-Hyun) rescued a young girl, Yi-Hwa (Kim Hyun-Soo), after nearly causing her death upon his arrival. Able to freeze time, teleport, heightened senses seven times more than a human, telekinesis, and a long lifespan, he would use his abilities to protect his identity. Min-Joon kept an eye on the girl he rescued while continuing his study of human culture and occasionally helping people. However, Min-Joon quickly learned his good deeds and subtle interventions usually doesn’t help the people he intended and have more dire consequences; he decided not to help man ever again, except for Yi-Hwa.

Yi-Hwa was an unfortunate native of her times. At the age of 15, she became a widow before even meeting her husband. Later, her in-laws tried to kill her, but was saved by Min-Joon. He revealed he’s not entirely human and Yi-Hwa presumed he’s a supernatural being; both developed a loving bond for each other. It was because of helping Yi-Hwa, Min-Joon would get himself nearly killed and his survey team left after failing to find him. Unfortunately, Yi-Hwa ultimately died after being pursued by royal guards and escaping with an injured Min-Joon. The survey team tried searching for him, but the skies filled with brilliant lights panicked the kingdom and it's believed somehow Yi-Hwa was the source of the wickedness. Unable to use his full power, Yi-Hwa shielded Min-Joon from their arrows, but at the cost of her life. Filled with grief, he would feel a long sense of guilt and sorrow for Yi-Hwa; he decided to limit his interactions and bonds with humanity.

After Yi-Hwa's death, Min-Joon remained within Korea until modern times. In between, whenever he used his powers to help someone, they would react with fear and anger, forcing him to run away. Even when he developed a close friendship with people over the ages, they would ultimately react in fear and reject him after learning his true identity. Because of this, he has maintained his secrecy, faking his death every decade to move onto a new life to avoid people noticing he’s not aging. Min-Joon has amassed a small fortune throughout the centuries and only kept certain items in a private room (mementos, art works, and journal). His only friend is a lawyer, Jang Young-Mok (Kim Chang-Wan), someone he saved 30 years ago from attempted suicide and has been his confidant, keeper of his assets, and occasional “father” to the people around him. It is Young-Mok that has been helping him change his identities whenever he needed to. Despite being acclimated to human society, Min-Joon has maintained a cold and isolated attitude towards the people around him to avoid attachment.

Twelve years before main events, Min-Joon had taken a different identity and worked as a doctor. While working, he sensed that his beloved Yi-Hwa was in danger. He felt it was impossible that she would be alive, but he acted upon his premonitions to investigate. A young girl named Cheon Song-Yi (Kim Hyun-Soo), who looks exactly like Yi-Hwa, just had a family fight and ran off into the streets. A truck was about to hit her until Min-Joon froze time to save her from danger. After Min-Joon saved her, Song-Yi developed a fascination for her savior and hoped to see him again. However, Min-Joon never saw her again and both moved on with their lives.

Main Story

In modern times, winter of 2013, Min-Joon is now a teacher at a local South Korean university, where he teaches social studies. Min-Joon poses himself as a prodigy Harvard graduate and leads a uneventful existence until he can return home. Although he was left behind, there was still a means to return to his homeworld. His kind had transformed an orbiting asteroid into a base to stage operations there, however, he had to wait approximately 400 years for the asteroid to orbit close enough to Earth for him to depart. With the station coming closer, he intends to sell off all his belongings and return home. However, Cheon Song-Yi’s entry greatly changes things.

Cheon Song-Yi (Jun Ji-Hyun) is a famous K-actress and model with a selfish and egotistical attitude towards everyone. In her personal life are her two middle school friends, Yoo Se-Mi (Yoo In-Na) and Lee Hwi-Kyung (Park Hae-Jin). Since she was 15, Song-Yi has been an actress and idol for a long time. Hwi-Kyung always held an unrequited love for Song-Yi, while Se-Mi had the same problem for Hwi-Kyung. Because of Song-Yi's success in life and career, she doesn't realize Se-Mi quietly resented Song-Yi for Hwi-Kyung not loving her. Se-Mi also resented the fact she has been in support roles for a long time and was never seen as a respected rival; the many years of being shadowed by Song-Yi has made her bitter and vengeful. Because of this, this would motivate Se-Mi to incite problems into Song-Yi's life to make her suffer. These events would cause Min-Joon's life tb be dragged into Song-Yi's life after she becomes his next door neighbor.

Song-Yi moved next door to Min-Joon and proved to be a very disruptive person in his life; he has become restless and annoyed because of her loud late night antics. It would become additionally awkward and difficult when Min-Joon gets Song-Yi as his student. Things would change when he realized Song-Yi is the adult version of his beloved Yi-Hwa and the girl he saved twelve years ago. Unsure is it reincarnation or coincidence, Min-Joon felt connected to Song-Yi and began looking after her troublesome life. However, this pressed Min-Joon to violate all personal rules and began to risk exposure of himself because of it.

Se-Mi incited a bitter rivalry between Song-Yi and Han Yoo-Ra (Yoo In-Young), another successful model and actress. However, the rather public rivalry would ultimately lead to Song-Yi's downfall after Yoo-Ra had died. While in a boat party with Korea's elite, Yoo-Ra was secretly in a relationship with Lee Jae-Kyung (Shin Song-Rok), the second and middle brother to Hwi-Kyung and heir to the S&C Corporation. Yoo-Ra discovered a major secret from Jae-Kyung and only ask him to marry her to keep her silence. However, Jae-Kyung doesn't like to be controlled and had her thrown over the water. Shortly after, Jae-Kyung had his henchmen erase all possible evidence of their romantic involvement and even produced a suicide note to convince the police and the public that Yoo-Ra died because of depression. The case hasn't closed yet and the public concluded that Song-Yi's friction with Yoo-Ra contributed to her suicide, turning her into a pariah in her life and career.

Eventually, Song-Yi's negative social perception had ruined her career. Her sponsors, agency, contract deals, and management company all retreated from her. Although not directly responsible for Yoo-Ra's death, the media hounded her and it was then she sought Min-Joon's help. Through circumstances of danger and the troubles she brings with her fame, Min-Joon gave her shelter at his place and the two slowly developed romantic feelings for each other. However, Min-Joon always made it clear to her he's not interested and she's a bother to keep his distance; as their bond grows, he finds himself bending and breaking his own rules to help her.

Jae-Kyung secretly killed his elder brother several years ago (the original heir to the S&C fortune) and had it looked like an accidental death by drunk driving. He had grown jealous of his brother's position and eliminated him to take over; Jae-Kyung didn't realize at the time that when he killed his brother, he had a recording pen on him that recorded his crime. It was several years later that Jae-Kyung's wife accidentally discovered then pen and its secret. When she refused to turn the recording pen over, Jae-Kyung divorced and forcibly imprisoned his wife into a private hospital and labeled her mentally unstable until he can retrieve the pen. Yoo-Ra actually discovered Jae-Kyung's ex-wife and tried to extract the information from her, but Jae-Kyung had her killed instead. Yoo-Ra might have died, but Song-Yi accidentally recovered Yoo-Ra's purse, which contained a video USB recording of their conversation. It was because of this that Jae-Kyung began invasive and shadow tactics to retrieve the evidence.

While looking after Song-Yi, Min-Joon took notice of Jae-Kyung's activities. Jae-Kyung also realized that Min-Joon was on to him and the two warned each other of what might happen if their situation haven't resolved. Jae-Kyung had his men drug and set up Song-Yi's car to make it look like an auto accident via mechanical failure. However, Min-Joon risked exposure by instantly transporting himself to her location and stopped the car from running over a cliff. Min-Joon would later confront Jae-Kyung and he would give a grand display of his teleportation and time stopping powers to warn Jae-Kyung to back off, but this only intrigue Jae-Kyung and he even wants to recruit Min-Joon for his abilities. Realizing he couldn't directly take on Min-Joon, Jae-Kyung exploited Min-Joon's attachment for Song-Yi to bend things into his favor.

Hwi-Kyung resisted Min-Joon the entire time, believing he's a threat to his chance to marry Song-Yi. However, after Song-Yi turned him down from another proposal and more problems appeared, Min-Joon warned Hwi-Kyung to protect Song-Yi from his own brother. However, with the help of Se-Mi, Hwi-Kyung discovered Min-Joon is the same person that saved Song-Yi twelve years ago and became extra threatened and disturbed by his youthful appearance. However, Hwi-Kyung became distracted with his private investigation into his brother's actions against Song-Yi, allowing Min-Joon and Song-Yi time to bond.

Despite his constant resistance, Song-Yi continues to pursue Min-Joon. In a date that he hoped to scare her away, he finally revealed that he's an alien and that he's the same person that saved her twelve years ago. However, it was met with much skepticism. Despite Min-Joon causing a controlled explosion, Song-Yi thinks this is an elaborate trick. However, she eventually believes him as she found Min-Joon in a photo over a century ago, his hearing powers, teleportation, and levitation abilities. Although taken back at first, Song-Yi still wanted to be with Min-Joon; he ultimately broke her heart by making a firm rejection. Min-Joon felt it would be a cruel thing to be with Song-Yi and then abruptly leave her; he rather be with her.

After much rejection from Min-Joon, Song-Yi is tired of seeing Min-Joon and refuses any help from him, despite she needs it more than ever. After nearly dying and realizing he couldn't bear the thought of Hwi-Kyung being with Song-Yi, he finally tried to woo Song-Yi, but she lost all appetite to go through another emotional round with him. However, he made things clear this time by using his powers to levitate her towards him and kissed her; the two finally became a couple.

Their relationship had just started, but already there was a problem, Min-Joon has to go back to his homeworld or face death. When the two talked about their romantic journeys together, he wanted to do them all in a single month before the arrival of the comet that would take him home. However, Song-Yi became very upset as that would mean he would never come back. Sadly disappointed how short their relationship is, Min-Joon eventually agreed to stay with her forever; she doesn't know it would mean he forfeit his life for her. In between, Jae-Kyung continues to meddle in everyone's lives.

After saving Song-Yi from a movie stunt accident (caused by Jae-Kyung), Hwi-Kyung pretended he's suffering from memory lapses to throw off his brother's scent as he investigated him. When he discovered the pen of his eldest brother, he turned in all evidence for the police to have him arrested. Min-Joon also played a part in helping to gather evidence to get Jae-Kyung arrested and charged for murder and wrongful imprisonment in front of the public press. However, Jae-Kyung still had one final card to play before going to jail.

Jae-Kyung tricked Song-Yi to supposedly meet Min-Joon while tricking her to drink a bottle of her favorite wine laced with poison. Knowing Song-Yi's life was in danger infuriated Min-Joon and he began to show his super strength and speed in front of the press. He then threw Jae-Kyung into the crowd of press while he carelessly teleports to her location with many reporters witnessing the act. He grabbed Song-Yi and instantly took her to the hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, the medical staff was busy and wasn't fast reacting enough for the medics to understand. Since he was once a doctor, he used his powers to form a barrier while he pumps the poison out of her system. After she recovers, he teleports her (in front of national TV) to a secluded island where the two can avoid prying eyes.

After a brief pause on their lives, the two returned to civilization to answer to the public. With the help of some police allies, Min-Joon at best had some minor charges and his abilities were excused off as a magician's act. Song-Yi later realized that Min-Joon would eventually die if he stays, but would live if he leaves; she encourages him to leave and they'll wait for each other. Not long, Min-Joon marries Song-Yi and the two had a brief marriage until the arrival of the comet. Taking advantage of the shooting star, a UFO flies into Korea to relocate their lost comrade. Min-Joon gave some brief words, but was taken away before he could finish giving his farewell.

After Min-Joon's departure, Song-Yi's life took extremes of ups and downs. Han Yoo-Ra's true cause of death has gathered national sympathy for Song-Yi and her popularity has returned. Despite back on track with her career, Song-Yi has been suffering lovesickness. Min-Joon anticipated Song-Yi would feel depressed and asked Song-Yi's brother and Hwi-Kyung to look after her. Even Se-Mi offered support as sisters who understand the feeling of being heart broken. However, things would remain difficult for her.

Three Years Later & Return

It's now 2017, three years since Min-Joon left. Song-Yi's popularity continues to be strong. The world has completely forgotten about Min-Joon, but those that care for him continues to watch over his belongings, believing he'll come back one day. Hwi-Kyung continues to remain at Song-Yi's side, even used his company finances to finance Song-Yi's projects. While Song-Yi managed to lift herself out of her depression to live her life, she never gotten over Min-Joon and still misses him greatly. Her wish would finally come true while at the 2017 Korean Artist Awards Ceremony.

While appearing before journalists and tabloid photographers on the red carpet, time suddenly froze and Min-Joon appeared before her. Surprised to see her love again, Min-Joon gave her a passionate kiss and unfroze time. Because of this, all of Korea can see Min-Joon kissing Song-Yi on the media. However, he vanished again, leaving Song-Yi and the media wondering what happened to him. It was only later that Min-Joon explained that he quickly recovered his energies, but couldn't completely return to Earth without phasing in and out of time and space; he will randomly phase in and out of reality.

Even though he could vanish any moment, Song-Yi was happy they could be together, no matter how brief it can be. In between his random appearances, he stayed long enough to move out of their apartments and buy a new house. The couple lives a new quiet lease on life, happily and in love together.

Production

As the protagonist of the series possesses superpowers, like the ability to teleport and stop time, special effects had to be employed. The crew used 60 small, special cameras for bullet time effect creation. The GoPro camera was installed in 180 degrees and "stopped" characters were filmed from various angles. The final scene is a montage of various smaller details and then enhanced digitally. This was the first time that HD cameras were used to produce a television series in South Korea.[33]

Among the filming locations were two newly built luxury buildings, Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park (DDP) and Boutique Monaco.[34] The Korea Tourism Organization later held a 3D exhibit at the DDP Art Hall from 10 June to 15 August 2014 which featured one of the house sets used, with the display rooms titled "Start," "Fate," "Shaking" and "Longing" in line with the plot of the drama.[35][36]

Reception

My Love from the Star had an impact on Korean fashion, with clothes, accessories and make-up products worn by Jun Ji-hyun seeing an "unprecedented" surge in orders.[37][38] It also placed first as "Korea's most favorite program" in a poll conducted by Gallup Korea in February 2014, with 11.5 percent of the votes.[39] The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, a children's novel that languished in obscurity for five years, was propelled to the top of the bestseller lists in major Korean bookstores after the male protagonist repeatedly quotes from it throughout the series.[40]

Besides high viewership ratings in South Korea, the series also proved to be successful in China, where it became the most expensive Korean drama sold as of February 2014, at US$35,000 per episode.[41][42] It also became one of the most viewed streaming shows on Chinese platform iQiyi, where it was streamed more than 2.5 billion times from December 2013 to February 2014.[43] The series struck up a craze for chimaek (chicken and maekju), a popular Korean snack of chicken and beer, which is the favorite snack of the female protagonist. Despite declining chicken consumption in China due to fear of H7N9 bird flu, fried chicken restaurants in cities saw an increase in orders since the running of the show.[43][44] Meanwhile, Korean instant noodle maker Nongshim said sales in January and February 2014 ― while the drama aired ― rose to a record high in its more than 15-year history of business in China; this, too, was attributed to a scene in the drama where the couple enjoyed a bowl of noodles on a trip.[45]

TV professionals in China have likewise weighed in on the Korean drama's positive reception in their country. In an op-ed piece published by the China Daily, writer Xiao Lixin attributed its success to "great innovations in South Korean TV productions in terms of themes and narrative patterns," praising the plot as "logical and fast-paced" interspersed with "whimsy and romantic punch lines," and that "high-speed photography and computer-generated effects" helped "create a lifelike visual impact."[46] Yu Zheng, another writer, found My Love from the Star worthy of being studied, and thought the plot was "simple but has tension. A good combination of outdoor and indoor scenes."[44] Variety show director Pang Bo remarked that the makers of the series paid attention to technical details even in the shortest scenes involving special effects.[44] Chinese celebrities such as Zhao Wei and Gao Yuanyuan also followed and actively posted about the series on Sina Weibo, boosting its popularity.[43][44][47] The Washington Post reported in March 2014 that the Korean drama was discussed at China's National People's Congress, particularly in a committee of political advisory body Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), where it reportedly topped the agenda among delegates from the culture and entertainment industry.[48][49][50][51]

Film version

Due to its popularity in mainland China, the series was re-edited into a two-hour feature-length film by Chinese production company Meng Jiang Wei, and was released in theaters in summer 2014.[74]

Remake

An American remake is under development at ABC, to be written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, and produced by HB Entertainment and EnterMedia Contents in association with Sony Pictures Television. Executive producers will be Craft and Fain, creator of the original series Park Ji-eun, CEO of HB Entertainment Moon Bo-mi, and Sebastian Lee and David Kim from EnterMedia Contents.[75]

Plagiarism suit

In a statement posted on her blog on 20 December 2013, author Kang Kyung-ok alleged that the series' concept was plagiarized from her 2008 comic book Seol-hee, claiming that the background, setup, jobs, and relationships between characters were similar.[52][76] The spokesperson from production company HB Entertainment denied the plagiarism charge, calling it "nonsensical" since the male protagonist in Kang's story is human, not an alien, and that screenwriter Park Ji-eun "had never read or heard of" Seol-hee. A representative from SBS told news outlets that the network would investigate the matter.[77] On 20 May 2014, Kang filed her lawsuit in court against Park Ji-eun and HB Entertainment, asking for ₩600 million in damages.[78] HB Entertainment responded that it was prepared to "strongly confront" the lawsuit with their own evidence and witnesses, calling the charges of plagiarism "synonymous to a death sentence" to creators which must be "eradicated."[79] Kang dropped her lawsuit on 3 July 2014 after an out-of-court settlement.[80]

Indonesian television network RCTI aired a TV series in 2014 titled Kau Yang Berasal Dari Bintang, first thought to be an authorized remake of My Love from the Star, but was then found to be a plagiarized version, with the Indonesian series having exactly the same set up and storyline as the Korean drama. In an interview with Korean media outlet TV Report, a representative from SBS Contents Hub said, "The drama was created without the obtainment of legal publication rights. You could view it as plagiarism. [...] While we were in the process of discussing the sale of legal publication rights with another Indonesian enterprise, this drama came out. We are in the midst of finding what course of action to take."[81][82]
