Munirka
Munirka is an urban area in South West Delhi, located near Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) Campuses.
Munirka is a mini India. This urban village in the South West of Delhi has a pan Indian demography. The population consists of people belonging to almost every Indian province. Even it has been a delightful abode of many foreigners with India at heart. Mostly, it is a crammed full suburb where old and new superbly mix with each other. Here live both women in veil and women wearing spaghetti straps. Tradition and fashion all walk along making it a uniquely diverse but interestingly different Indian colony.
Today’s Munirka has a long-tailed history, which dates back to the 15th century. The name Munirka is a short take of Munir Khan, who was a jagirdar of the area. The place has witnessed many developments since its establishment. During the 80’s, a few of its residents moved in the adjacent area to build its sister village Mohammadpur. It is bordered by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on south, RK Puram on north, Ber Sarai and IIT campus on south-east. This high population density area has been a magnet for migrants. Two factors are behind it. First, it is conveniently nestled on the outer ring road through which the capital’s business centres can be easily reached. Second, it is close to many high class institutions and localities. Being near to JNU and IIT it has been a major crowd puller. From competitive exam students, to software engineers, and artisans to call centre workers; Munirka house one and all. A good number of its population also consists of people coming from the north-eastern states of India. Foreign people who reside here belong to countries like Japan, Kenya, Thailand, Korea, Iran, Sweden to name but a few.
Its neighborhood consists of JNU campus on south,Vasant vihar on North-West, RK Puram on northern side and IIT campus and Ber sarai on south-eastern front. The Outer ring road forms the north to east boundary of this and also making it accessible. This is near flyover. Munirka is one of most rural area inside new Delhi. In side munirka streets r very narrow and just 2.2-2.5m wide and not straight also. The nearest metro station is Hauz Khas.
