The eight municipalities of the Kainuu Region in Finland are divided to form two sub-regions.
Kajaani sub-region
1. Kajaani (Kajana)
2. Paltamo (Paldamo)
3. Ristijärvi
4. Sotkamo
Kehys-Kainuu sub-region
5. Kuhmo
6. Suomussalmi
7. Hyrynsalmi
8. Puolanka (Puolango)
Former municipalities
- Kajaanin maalaiskunta (merged with Kajaani in 1977)
- Säräisniemi (formed Vaala with a part of Utajärvi in 1954)
- Vuolijoki (merged with Kajaani in 2007)
