Muddy Waters Research Group is a privately held due diligence based equity research company that identifies overseas Chinese stocks that it expects to change in value by 30% or more. The company is especially known for claiming to spot fraudulent accounting practices at Chinese companies.[1]
History
The company was founded by Carson Block, an American short-seller.[2] The company is named after the Chinese proverb “ 浑水摸鱼 ” 'catching fish in muddy waters'.[3]
Company became known to Wall Street when it released reports on Sino-Forest's timber holding,[4] which eventually lead to Sino-Forest filing for bankruptcy in Canada.
Muddy Waters proved unsuccessful in calls on companies such as American Tower Corp or Olam. [5]
