The Morning Leader is a Sri Lankan English-language newspaper. It is published by Leader Publications (Pvt) Ltd. Its sister publications are The Sunday Leader and Iruresa. The Morning Leader was refounded by Lasantha Wickramatunge who was assassinated in January of 2009. It is known for its independent news coverage and it has faced arson attacks from men with complicity from the Sri Lankan authorities.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The Morning Leader was in operation at the beginning of the twentieth century. The paper powerfully moulded public opinion when it was under the management and editorship of Armand de Souza and played a vital role during the Riots of 1915. It was owned by the De Soysa family. After the demise of Armond de Souza, Prof J.C.L. Rodrigo and Sir Susantha de Fonseka became its editors. Others associated with the paper include Sir Marcus Fernando, Sir James Peiris and Dr. W. A. de Silva. Morning Leader went out of business and ceased publication in 1932[7] (until it was refounded by Mr. Lasantha Wickramatunge six decades later).
