Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS[2]) is a public school district that serves Montgomery County, Maryland. It is the largest school district in Maryland and the 18th largest in the United States. As of the 2009–2010 school year, the district had 11,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers serving 141,777 students at 200 schools.[3] In 2010, MCPS was awarded a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The county spends $2 billion on public schools, about half of the county's budget.[4] The Board of Education has a student member of the board (or SMOB) that has full voting rights, except in certain cases.
The Montgomery County Public Schools honor rolls are published each quarter for the 65 middle and high schools by Connected Communities Newswire.
History
In the early 1950s, elementary students of color attended one of four elementary schools, Linden, Ken-Gar, Takoma Park, and River Road, all of which were considered substandard.[5][6] Older students of color attended Lincoln Junior High School in Rockville and Carver High School in Rockville.[5][6] Montgomery County was the one of the first seven counties in Maryland that desegregated its public schools when it did so in September 1955[7][8] following the ruling by the United States Supreme Court that ordered desegregation of all schools in the nation.[9]
The "Smondrowski Amendment"
On November 11, 2014, the Board approved an amendment introduced by Rebecca Smondrowski to modify the school calendar to delete all references to religious holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. The amendment was in response to requests by an interfaith organization called Equality for Eid which asked that the listing for the Muslim Holiday, Eid Al-Adha be listed alongside Yom Kippur which occurred on the same day.
The Smondrowski amendment received both national[10] and international[11] attention. Criticism of the Smondrowski amendment came from a variety of sources including the Montgomery County Executive, Isiah Leggett, and congressman John Delaney.[12]
List of schools
