Miss Earth 2001 was the first edition of the Miss Earth pageant.[2][3] The pageant coronation night was held on 28 October 2001 at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Philippines.[2][4][5] 42 delegates competed in the pageant,[1] which has a focus on environmental issues. Catharina Svensson, a law student from Denmark, was crowned the pageant's first winner.[6][1]
Miss Earth was formally launched in a press conference on April 3, 2001 along with the search for a Miss Philippines to represent the Philippines in the international competition.[3][7][8][9]
