Michele Heights
Michele Heights is a small neighbourhood located in Ottawa, Ontario. Located in the west end of the city, it is bounded by Bayshore Drive in the west, the Ottawa River to the north, Pinecrest Road to the east and Richmond Road to the south.
The neighborhood, along with nearby Britannia, Bayshore, Fairfield Heights, Lincoln Heights and Foster Farm is known to have one of the highest crime rates in the city due notably of the presence of some gang groups. It is also one of the poorest districts outside of downtown.
The majority of residential units consist of small homes, townhouses and apartment buildings. The area contains a major movie theater called "The Coliseum" operated by Famous Players. It is also located close to Bayshore Shopping Centre, one of the main shopping centres of the city.
Most of the residents that live in the community range from Africans and Arabs to Asians and Latinos.
Michele Heights also consists of Michele Heights Park, with the Michele Heights Community Centre, outdoor basketball courts, seasonal wading pool, baseball diamond and The Michele Heights Community Garden. The Michele Heights Community House operates many programs for children and teenagers.
Also in the community is a Tim Hortons, Rexall, Shoppers Drug Mart, two medical clinics (Appletree and Access), a medical arts building, CML imaging, GMA Dynacare laboratories, numerous ethnic grocery stores, Food Friendz, small independent clothing stores, Britannia Dental Clinic, The Tao Chi Centre, Apple Auto Glass, a Chinese, Somali, Indian, Turkish and a large restaurant located in the parking lot of the Coliseum.
Michele Heights is only a 10- to 15-minute walk from Britannia Beach, and Andrew Hayden Park, the Ottawa River bike path also goes from Andrew Hayden Park all the way to the Parliament Buildings.
