Michal Hornstein, CM GOQ (born September 17, 1920) is a Canadian businessman, art collector and philanthropist.
Biography
Born in Kraków, Poland, he was captured by the German army during World War II and deported to Auschwitz. However, he managed to jump off the train and spent the rest of the war hiding in the forests of Czechoslovakia and living in Budapest.[1]
He immigrated to Canada in 1951 and became a citizen in 1957. He founded the company, Federal Construction Ltd., a real estate company, where he made his fortune.[1]
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Gallery of Canada.
Honours
In 1984 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 1993 he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec, promoted to Officer in 2002 and Grand Officer in 2013.[1]
