Mixed martial arts record from Sherdog
last updated on: 23 October 2015

Michael "Venom" Page (Born 7 April 1987) is an EnglishTrinidadian kickboxer, karateka and mixed martial artist, fighting in the welterweight division.[5][6][7][8] He is recognised in the MMA community for his unorthodox fighting style, which he has been using since competing in freestyle kickboxing (points fighting) and sport karate.[9][10]

Kickboxing

His father Master Curtis Page Sr. (three-time kickboxing world champion) and mother Pauline Reece are Lau Gar Kung Fu practitioners.[2][11][12][13] Of his nine siblings, his sister Sefena and brothers Curtis Jr., Jaime, and Kalon are also kickboxing world champions.[2][6][14][15][16][17]

Page began training in martial arts at the age of 3 in Lau Gar kung fu and competed at his first Kickboxing tournament at the age of 5.[11][18][19][20][21][22] By the age of 8, he began to devote himself to competition.[17] Because almost everyone in his family were involved in martial arts he felt it was only natural to follow suit.[11][13][23]

Page won ten world championships in kickboxing – his first was at the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships 1998 in Orlando, Florida when he was only 12 years old – as well as being crowned British champion over twenty-five times.[11][17][20][24][25][26][27][28] By the age of 13, Page started entering adult competitions.[17][20][23] To prepare, Page would train five hours a day for five days a week.[29] During tournament days he would often fight up to fourteen times due to competing in three weight classes and at one point even fought twenty-two times in a day across five weight classes.[30] One notable world title win was at the W.A.K.O. World Championships 2007 (Coimbra) where, at the −89 kg semi-contact division, he won the gold medal after defeating Dave Heffernan.[31][32] He also competed at the W.A.K.O. Austrian Classics Worldcup 2008 (Kufstein), winning gold in the −84 kg semi-contact division over Krisztián Jároszkievicz.[33][34] Page returned the following year to win gold at the W.A.K.O. Austrian Classics Worldcup 2009 (Walchsee), placing first in both the −84 kg light-contact and semi-contact divisions, defeating Bojan Miskovic and Zvonimir Gribl respectively.[35][36] Page – appointed as the WKA Head Coach – led a team to the WKA World Championships 2009 (Huelva), defeating Ben Stewart to claim gold in the organization's first semi-contact prize competition and bronze in the −90 kg light-contact division, upon being bested by Tarek Haydar.[1][10][37][38] He then participated in the W.A.K.O. World Championships 2009 (Lignano Sabbiadoro) and finished second in the −84 kg semi-contact division, after being defeated by Krisztián Jároszkievicz.[39] On 4 September 2010, he competed at the World Combat Games 2010 (Beijing) in the −89 kg semi-contact division, where he won silver, just losing out on gold to the division winner Krisztián Jároszkievicz.[40][41][42]

Page was scouted by the Great Britain Taekwondo team to train for the Olympics but turned it down to pursue a professional combat sports career.[43]

He coaches and trains others in kickboxing when not competing, primarily as an instructor at the Oxford Martial Arts Academy and the Great Britain Martial Arts Academies in Epsom, Cobham, Leatherhead, Croydon, and Guildford.[44][45][46][47][48][49][50]

Mixed martial arts career

Background

Dissatisfied with the lack of exposure as well as the politics involved in competing among various kickboxing associations, Page decided to cross over into another sport; experimenting with Boxing and Muay Thai before settling on Mixed martial arts.[43][51][52][53][54][55] Page initially considered going to American Top Team during his transition into MMA since his older siblings live in Miami but chose to start his career with London Shootfighters (East End) in July 2011, training with the likes of John Hathaway, Cláudio da Silva, Karlos Vemola, Alex Reid, Marcin Held, Jim Wallhead, and Che Mills.[13][19][56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65] Page also sparred with Alexander Gustafsson.[66][67] He spends up to seven hours training in the gym.[8] Page entertained the possibility of cutting down to 155 lbs to fight at lightweight but ultimately remained at welterweight.[68]

UCMMA

Page made his MMA debut at UCMMA 26 against Ben Dishman, after his original opponent Sam Boo withdrew a week before the fight.[69][70] He won via technical knockout from a first round tornado kick.[71][72] This fight had the whole MMA community talking about Page's striking skills, going as far as calling him "The UK's Anderson Silva."[73][74][75][76]

Page next faced Miguel Bernard at UCMMA 27 in a 175 lbs catchweight bout, winning once again in impressive fashion. After both men spent over a minute using their unorthodox striking styles, Page slipped and fell onto his back. Bernard followed him to the ground, prompting Page to go for a triangle choke. After managing to pull his head out, Bernard found himself in an armbar, forcing him to tap out in the first round.[77][78]

Page then went back to his roots as a kickboxer when he fought in a UK-1 bout at UCMMA 29. Page was supposed to challenge UCMMA UK-1 welterweight champion Peter Irving for the belt.[79][80] However, Irving pulled out of the fight due to injury and was replaced by Jefferson George after another three opponents dropped out within a month for undisclosed reasons.[81][82] Page won the fight after knocking out George from a two punch combination in the second round.[83]

Super Fight League

On 23 June 2012, Super Fight League announced that they had signed Michael Page to an exclusive year and a half, four-fight contract.[84][85][86]

Page made his debut for the Super Fight League on 2 November 2012 at SFL 7 against Haitham El-Sayed, winning by technical knockout in round one via doctor stoppage due to cuts.[87]

Page returned to Super Fight League on 12 April 2013 to face Ramdan Mohamed as the main event at SFL 15 in India and won via rear-naked choke in the first round.[88]

Bellator MMA

After winning his UK-1 fight against Jefferson George, Page announced post-fight that he signed a five-fight contract with Bellator MMA, and that he will fight for both Bellator and the Super Fight League under their respective contracts.[89][90][91]

Page was expected to make his debut for the promotion at Bellator 82 but pulled out of the bout citing surgery for an old jaw injury.[92][93][94]

Page eventually made his debut on 21 March 2013 at Bellator 93.[95] He faced Ryan Sanders and won the fight via knockout at just ten seconds into the first round.[96]

Page was scheduled to fight at Bellator 102 but had to withdraw due to a rib cartilage injury, an ankle injury, and a knee injury.[97][98][99][100][101] A later appearance slated for Bellator 109 was also cancelled because of lingering injuries.[102]

Page was slated to fight Fight Master: Bellator MMA contestant Marcus Aurelio at Bellator 120 on 17 May 2014 but the latter withdrew, Ricky Rainey was immediately sought as a replacement after his Bellator 116 victory and was informed of his opponent a week later; with just over a month of preparation Page won via technical knockout in the first round.[19][103][104][105][106]

Page next faced Nah-Shon Burrell at Bellator 128 on 10 October 2014.[107] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[108]

On 19 December 2014, Michael Page confirmed that he was no longer signed with Super Fight League and instead signed an exclusive two year, five-fight contract with Bellator MMA.[109][110]

Page was expected to face Curtis Millender at Bellator 134 on 27 February 2015.[111] However, Page pulled out of the fight due to a cut over his left eye which was sustained during a guard passing drill and required six stitches; he was replaced by Brennan Ward.[112][113][114]

Page faced Rudy Bears at Bellator 140 on 17 July 2015.[115] He won the fight by knockout in the first round.[116]

Page fought Charlie Ontiveros at Bellator 144 on 23 October 2015 with less than three weeks' notice after four opponents – including his initial opponent Marius Žaromskis and later Cristiano Souza – pulled out of the fight for undisclosed reasons since late August.[117][118][119][120][121] He won the fight via verbal submission due to elbows in the first round after dislocating his opponent's jaw.[122][123][124]

He was expected to fight Fernando Gonzalez on 4 March 2016 at Bellator 151 as the co-main event but withdrew from the bout for undisclosed reasons and was replaced by Gilbert Smith.[125][126]

Fighting style

Page describes his discipline as "not Karate, not Taekwondo, it’s a hands-down kickboxing style" and likens himself to a matador.[127][128][129] He deliberately engages in histrionics while fighting to unnerve his opponents and rile up the crowd.[130][131]
