The Suzuki Celerio is a city car manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India and Suzuki Motor Thailand in Rayong Province Thailand, that was first launched in February 2014. It replaces the A-Star and Zen Estilo and is marketed to compete with the Tata Indica Vista, Honda Brio, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo, Chevrolet Beat, and Nissan Micra Active.[1][2] Maruti Suzuki unveiled the Celerio at the Auto Expo 2014,[3] after being previewed as the A:Wind concept model at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2013.[4][5] Maruti Suzuki Celerio, a Hatchback has 12 versions available in India. Maruti Suzuki Celerio has 7 Petrol cars, 4 Diesel cars and 1 CNG cars. Other popular cars in the similar price range of Maruti Suzuki Celerio are Chevrolet Beat, Fiat Grande Punto and Ford Figo. Maruti Suzuki Celerio comes in 6 colours, namely, Blazing Red, Cerulean Blue, Glistening Grey, Pearl Arctic White, Silky Silver, Sunshine Ray.[6]
The Celerio is India's first car with an automatic gear shift called EZ Drive. The Petrol engine is a Suzuki K-series latest revision called K10B or K-NEXT.[7][8] The gearbox is basically a manual transmission with a transmission control unit (TCU) that actuates the hydraulics to shift the gears.[9]
History
The Suzuki Celerio was launched in India with six variants (base model ex-showroom price of INR 3.75 lakhs).[10] The diesel version of Celerio will be introduced in the first quarter of 2015. The hatchback is currently available in petrol and CNG fuel options.[11] It is planned to be launched on the European market in the second half of 2014, having its European premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014.[12] British, Irish, Australian and New Zealand destined cars are manufactured in the Suzuki's Rayong facility in Thailand.
Safety
The Suzuki Celerio scored 3 of 5 stars when tested by Euro NCAP in 2014 and 4 of 5 by ANCAP in 2015.[13][14] ANCAP and Euro NCAP received criticism claiming they underscored the Celerio relative to other cars that had fewer airbags or performed worse in crash tests.[15]
Recall
After two total brake failures during controlled tests by British motoring journalist Lewis Kingston, senior reviewer at What Car? and Autocar, all sales and test drives in the United Kingdom were temporarily suspended as of 2 February 2015. The decision was promptly made by Suzuki after two Celerios suffered complete brake failure in close succession during independent tests at Millbrook Proving Ground. In addition, owners who had just taken delivery in Britain were advised not to drive their cars. Following this announcement by Suzuki GB PLC, other right-hand drive importers such as Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand quickly followed suit. Left-hand drive markets are not affected; nor are cars manufactured and sold in India or Thailand. The condition was traced to an over sensitive brake pedal release mechanism. This mechanism is designed to retract after a heavy collision.
Suzuki GB PLC quickly instigated a recall and all customers were provided with a loan vehicle. Within 14 days of the incident a modified brake pedal release mechanism had been installed on every affected customer vehicle.
Diesel (India only)
Maruti Suzuki introduced its all new 793cc diesel engine in Celerio on 3 June 2015 at a price of INR 4.65 lacs. Celerio diesel is powered by Suzuki’s first ever indigenously developed 2 cylinder motor that puts out 46 bhp of max power and 125 Nm of peak torque. It also promises to deliver a segment-best mileage of 27.62 kmpl and is christened as the most economical diesel hatch India has received till now. Dimensionally, it is identical to the petrol version and apart from the diesel motor no additional feature is given.[17]
