Saving Jane is a band from Columbus, Ohio. The band is known for its songs "Girl Next Door", "Come Down To Me" and "SuperGirl".
History
2002-2008: Girl Next Door, One Girl Revolution and SuperGirl
What started out as simply a campfire song between strangers soon turned into a musical connection in the form of the Columbus, OH-based alternative pop/rock group Saving Jane. It was at this bonfire that vocalist Marti Dodson (then a junior at Ohio State University) and rhythm guitarist Pat Buzzard first met and subsequently became friends. The pair began writing songs together and when the time came to record their work, local drummer Dak Goodman was recruited to help. The trio found something in each other, and the decision was made to form an actual band. Booking their first show, they took the name Saving Jane from a cartoon Dodson had been doodling one late night at the studio. As the band slowly began making a name for itself around Columbus, an additional lead guitarist, Kris Misevski, and a borrowed bass player from Goodman's cover band rounded out the group. About a year later, tensions within the band lead to the departure of their borrowed bassist, and Jeremy Martin replaced him in 2002. Two years later, as Saving Jane found their style shifting more from acoustic roots to alternative rock, their manager insisted that Dodson be emphasized over the rest of the band; these changes eventually led to the exit of their lead guitarist. In February 2006, Mike Unger stepped down from Saving Jane for family reasons, and Brandon Hagan joined the band as a replacement, while keyboardist Joe Cochran who completed the lineup, left in late 2006. Also as of 2008, Jeremy Martin is no longer with the band. The new bassist is Eric Flores.
Saving Jane's full-length debut, Girl Next Door, was issued in October 2005 on Toucan Cove, and the title track found the band getting major radio air play of the single of the same name. Gaining the attention of major record labels, Republic/Universal Records signed them and they made their debut on the Billboard charts. The single with the same title, "Girl Next Door", peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video debuted on MTV's Total Request Live's countdown on April 24, 2006 at No. 9. The single "Come Down to Me" was released in late August and went on to sell over 100,000 copies.
In 2006, country singer Julie Roberts recorded a version of "Girl Next Door" which was released on her album Men and Mascara. (Saving Jane had released their own country remix of the song the previous winter, which was available on iTunes and got exposure on CMT and CMT.com.)
On August 7, 2007, Saving Jane's follow up album to Girl Next Door was released with the title One Girl Revolution. A single with the same title debuted in the summer of 2007. The album, One Girl Revolution was released in 2007, with a re-release version with a new song, "SuperGirl" in the album, SuperGirl in 2008.
2009-2010: "Butterflies", Vampire Diaries EP, Psycho Ex-Girlfriend
A new song, "Butterflies" was released on iTunes in 2009. In early 2010, Saving Jane's new EP title, Vampire Diaries EP was released on January 26, 2010 on iTunes, it has three songs, "Immortal", "In Love With a Vampire" and "Immortal (Twilight Mix)". A new song that was posted on MySpace titled "Love Will Wait"[1][2] may appear on an upcoming album.
On June 11, 2010, the band went on hiatus due to disputes with their record label.[3] On October 25, 2010, the single "Worst of Me"[4] was released onto iTunes, which is part of the upcoming new album, "Psycho Ex-Girlfriend" that is due for release in Spring 2011.
Meanwhile, guitarist Pat Buzzard is working as a solo artist and released his first single in August 2008, a cover of Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel", which features Brandon Hagan on guitar, bass, banjo, backing vocals, and Marti Dodson on backing vocals.[5]
2010-present: Formation of new band
After Saving Jane disbanded, Union Rose - a new band was formed, with founding members, Marti, Brandon and Nate.[6] Pat has opted out, stating that starting a new band is not the right move for him. Under the new band name, it was decided that their musical style would be more country-orientated, as opposed to Saving Jane's pop-rock sound.
In November 2010, Union Rose's first song "America's Sweetheart" was premiered on Radio 105.7 WLGC, and a 4-track-EP was also made available for download on the band's website for free. In September 2012, Union Rose's first official single, "Proud To Be A Country Girl" was released.
Marti has achieved gold records in Canada and Belgium as the writer of "SuperGirl" by Suzie McNeil and "She's Got Moves" by Kevin.
In August 2012, Marti formed a new project with hit songwriter Rick Ferrell ("Something Like That" by Tim McGraw, "Where Would You Be" by Martina McBride) who is also a southern Ohio native. The new duo is called "Sailor Sky" and will have music available in January 2013.
Pop culture
"Girl Next Door" has been used on many hit TV shows and also is in The Sims 2 in simlish, and "Supergirl" is used as the theme music for female Indy-Car racing star Danica Patrick and U.S. Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin. "Girl Next Door" was also the theme song for MTV's hit series "Tiara Girls", and "Imperfection" was used as the theme music for a WE network miniseries called "High School Confidential". Dodson did a stint as a spokesmodel for national clothing chain "Wet Seal".
