The 2009 Markham Ward 3 By-election took place on November 23, 2009 to elect a ward councillor to fill the spot that was left vacant after Tony C. Wong as Regional Councillor died and Joseph Virgilio of Ward 3 was appointed Wong's spot which left Ward 3 without a ward councillor.[1] The winner of this by-election served 11 months from November 23, 2009 to October 25, 2010, until the 2010 municipal election.

Background

Regional Councillor Tony C. Wong died in mid-2009 after municipal council approved of Joseph Virgilio (Ward 3 Councillor) to become new regional councillor until the 2010 Municipal Election. After this, Markham was left in a dilemma with Ward 3 spot vacant, town council approved on September 15, 2009 to have a by-election on November 23.[2]

Ward 3 Location

Ward 3 is bordered by 16th Avenue to the north, Highway 407 to the south, McCowan Road to the east and Warden Avenue to the west. Ward 3 is in the village of Unionville.
