Marina Abramović Institute
The Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) is a proposed multi-functional museum space in Hudson, NY, USA.[1] It was created by the internationally renowned performance artist Marina Abramović.
Mission
MAI is a platform for "long durational works", i.e. any work (of music, opera, film, theater, performance art, science, and others). A long durational work encourages both its performers and the audience to step outside of traditional conceptions of time and examine what this experience means to them. MAI uses what is known as the "Abramovic Method" to help participants to develop skills for observing long durational performances through "a series of exercises and environments designed to increase awareness of their physical and mental experience in the moment". [2]
Proposed Site
Abramović purchased the site for the institute in 2007.[3] Located in Hudson, New York, the building was built in 1933 and has been used as a theatre and community tennis center.[4] The building will be renovated according to a design by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu of OMA.[5]
Kickstarter Campaign
As of 2013, the early design phase of this project has been funded by a Kickstarter campaign.[6] The campaign was funded by more than 4,000 contributors, including Lady Gaga and Jay-Z.[7] Lady Gaga donated $100,000 to fund the Institute through Haus of Gaga.[8]
In conjunction with the campaign, game designer Pippin Barr is releasing a series of works thematically related to the MAI. The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute, which allows players to explore a web-based representation of the institute, was released in fall 2013.[9] Another MAI collaboration, Durations, consists of a series of small web games to be released throughout January 2014.[10]
Criticism
The Marina Abramovic Institute has been criticized for its use of unpaid "volunteers" for positions that require advanced skills, such as "proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and basic HTML / CSS coding, familiarity with non-profit administration." [11]
