Mariam Mukhtiar (Sindhi: مريم مختيار; November 24, 2015) was a Pakistani fighter pilot. She was Pakistan's first female fighter pilot to die in the line of duty.[1] She died after a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) FT-7PG aircraft crashed near Kundian in Mianwali District in the northwest of Punjab, Pakistan on November 24, 2015.[2]

Early life

Maryam Mukhtiar Shaikh was the daughter of Col.R. Mukhtiar Ahmed Shaikh, and her ancestors were from Pano Akil, Sindh. She was a keen football player and represented Balochistan province from 2007 to 2010.[3]

Career

Mukhtiar graduated as a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force in 2007, along with six other women. This group of seven were the first women to complete the fighter pilot training in Pakistan.[1]

Death

On Tuesday 24 November 2015, Mariam Mukhtiar Shaikh and her co-pilot Squadron leader Saqib Abbasi were on their routine operational training mission when their plane crashed near Kundian, Panjab..[4][5][6][7][8][9] Both occupants ejected from the cockpit and the plane crash-landed.[1] Abbasi suffered minor injuries in the accident,[10] however Mukhtar died of her injuries in a military hospital.[5]

She is buried in Malir Cantonment Graveyard.[11]

Awards

The Pakistan Senate Standing Committee on Defence (SSCD) recommended Mariam Mukhtiar for a state award.[10][12][13] She has been awarded with the military award Tamgha-e-Basalat by the Government of Pakistan.[14]
