Maharaja Ganga Singh University (MGSU, Hindi: महाराजा गंगा सिंह विश्वविधालय), formerly University of Bikaner (UOB, Hindi: बीकानेर विश्वविधालय), is a university located in Bikaner in the state of Rajasthan, India. The university was established in 2003 and marks an important milestone in the evolution of tertiary education in Rajasthan. The University of Bikaner strives through teaching and research to achieve a better understanding of the unique issues affecting the local region.

Vice Chancellor

Chandrakala Padia

Prof. Chandrakala Padia is serving as Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner. Earlier she was Professor of Political Science in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and was serving as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, BHU, Varanasi and Director, Centre for Integrated Rural Development, BHU before joining the University of Bikaner. She has earlier served as Head, Department of Political Science, and Director, Centre for Women’s Studies and Development in Banaras Hindu University. She has also served as Chairperson, UGC Standing Committee on Women's Studies. She has been on many Advisory Committees of U.G.C, ICSSR, Planning Commission etc. She has been a Visiting Professor to the universities of McMaster, Toronto, Chicago and Stockholm. She has been the recipient of a number of awards, to name a few, US Fulbright Award, Salzburg Award, Indo-Shastri Canadian Fellowship, Indo-French Fellowship, D.P.Mukherjee Award of ISSA for contribution to Political Theory and Feminist Theory. She is the author of several books, to name a few: Liberty and Social Transformation: A Study in Bertrand Russell’s Political Thought; Feminism, Tradition and Modernity; Women in Dharmashastra: A phenomenological and critical analysis, Theorizing Feminism : A Cross Cultural Exploration. Besides these, she is the editor of a series of books under the title, Women in India’s Intellectual Tradition. She has been invited to deliver lectures abroad under many prestigious lecture series such as Political Theory series lecture of Chicago University, prestigious lecture series in Law of Toronto University, Women Studies series lecture of McMaster University etc. She has been the Indian representative to deliver the inaugural address at an International Conference on ‘Women in Indian Culture and Philosophy’ at Pedagogical University, Cracow, Poland. She has extensively worked on Gandhi, Human Rights, Indian and Western Political Thought and Third world feminism. She has to her credit many articles published in National and International Journals and the privilege of chairing several seminars and conferences both in India and abroad. She has been an acclaimed social scientist both in India and abroad.
