Maggie Nelson (born 1973) is an American poet, art critic, lyric essayist and nonfiction author of books such as Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions, The Red Parts: A Memoir, The Art of Cruelty, Something Bright, Then Holes, Jane: A Murder, The Latest Winter, Shiner, and Bluets.

Work

Nelson has taught at the Graduate Writing Program of the New School, Wesleyan University, and the School of Art and Design at Pratt Institute; she currently teaches in the CalArts MFA writing program.

She was awarded an Arts Writers grant in 2007 from the Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.[1]

In 2011, she was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Poetry.[2]

Themes

Nelson's work has included writing on crime, on women in the New York School experimental writing avant garde, on art and cruelty, philosophical explorations of the color blue, and the subject of queer families. Maggie Nelson's later works have been described as lyrical prose.

Personal life

Nelson is married to the artist Harry Dodge. The couple have a child together named Iggy. Nelson is the stepmother of Dodge's son from a previous relationship.[3]
