Madurai Junction railway station is an important Junction railway station in South India and the primary railway station serving the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The station is the headquarters of the Madurai railway division of the Southern Railways and is an A1 graded train station by the Indian Railways for being one of the top 100 booking stations in the country. It is also known by its official code:MDU.

Facilities

The Madurai Junction is a state-of-art modern railway station the finest in the Southern Railway, only after Chennai Central. The growth in tourism has made this change possible thanks to the thousands of tourists who visit here every year. The proposed plan will have ramp booking counters, luggage trolleys & disabled-friendly structures.

Indian railways has proposed a new railway line between Madurai and Tuticorin via Aruppukottai in Madurai-Tuticorin industrial corridor area[1]

Koodal Nagar Railway Station

Koodal Nagar Railway station is mainly used for Madurai Junction's Goods handling purpose. It has Rail sideware house and CONCOR for goods handling. A separate goods train going to Tuglakabad (TKD) from Koodalnagar (KON).

Rail Side Warehouse

A warehouse is a commercial building for storage of goods. Warehouses are used by manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, transport businesses, customs, etc. They are usually large plain buildings in industrial areas of cities. Currently Indian Railway maintains 17 Railside Ware House in various parts of India. Warehouses are designed for the loading and unloading of goods directly from railways, airports, or seaports. This Rail sideware houses are under controlled by Central Railside Warehouse Company Ltd.[7]

Inland Container Depot

ICD-Koodal Nagar, located in Madurai was commissioned on 3 March 1999. Spread over an area of 7.66 acres, the terminal is opened for both EXIM and Domestic traffic by Road and Rail. ICD-Koodal Nagar is under controlled by Container Corporation of India Ltd.[8]
