Made in Tyne & Wear is a local television station based in Sunderland. It broadcasts across Tyne and Wear, as well as covering into parts of Northumberland & County Durham. Its broadcast footprint stretches from Alnwick to Bishop Auckland.
Made in Tyne & Wear started broadcasting on Freeview channel 8 on 12 November 2014, and launched on Sky channel 117 and Virgin Media channel 159 on 24 November.[1]
According to its official viewing figures, the station is watched by over 235,000 people every week.
History
In May 2012, media regulator Ofcom extended the invitation for local operators in cities across the United Kingdom to operate a new local television service in their area.[2]
In February 2013, Ofcom announced that Made in Tyne & Wear had won the licence to operate the local TV service for the Newcastle area to be broadcast on channel 8.[3] It is set to become one of nineteen new stations to launch across the country in 2014.[4]
Made in Tyne & Wear is part of the Made Television network, which also launched channels in Bristol, Cardiff and Leeds in 2014.
Programming
Made in Tyne & Wear broadcasts a wide range of programming, filling a 24-hour schedule every day of the week, with news, current affairs, entertainment, culture, sports, property and cookery among its key programming strands.[5]
The station broadcasts a news show, Bulletin, from the Made in Tyne & Wear studio every evening during the week at 6.30 pm and 9 pm. The Lowdown, a nightly magazine show on local life, culture, arts and human interest stories is one of its flagship programmes, airing at 7 pm every evening during the week.
Made is home to the NYFA's Top Five. Where the NYFA's apprentices review short films sent in from directors all across the country.
A popular programme on Made in Tyne and Wear is #Ourcreativenorth, designed to celebrate the creative and digital media sector in the North East of England. The show is directed by Andrew Roughan and produced by Ben Ervine.
