Marais Erasmus, (born 27 February 1964, George, Cape Province), is a former South African cricketer who currently serves as an international cricket umpire. He is a member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and officiates in matches of all three formats of international cricket – Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
Playing career
Erasmus played First-class cricket for Boland cricket team from 1988/89 to 1996/97 as a fast-medium bowler and a useful lower-order batsman. His highest score of 103 not out came while batting at number seven in the second innings (after 51 not out in the first innings) against the visiting Warwickshire cricket team in the 1991/92 season.[1] His best bowling figures of 6-22 came against the touring New Zealand cricket team in the 1994/95 season, in a match that had to be abandoned early on the second day because of the dangerous pitch at Boland Bank Park.[2]
Umpiring career
Erasmus began umpiring in First-class cricket in South Africa in the 2002/03 season. He stood in his first International match when he made his T20I umpiring debut in the match between South Africa and Australia in Johannesburg on 24 February 2006. A year later he made his debut as an umpire in ODIs when he stood in the match between Kenya and Canada in Nairobi (Gym) on 18 October 2007. Erasmus went on to make his debut as a Test cricket umpire in 2010 when he stood in the match between Bangladesh and India in Chittagong from 17–21 January 2010.
Marais Erasmus was appointed to the ICC International Panel of Umpires in 2008 and was quickly promoted to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2010.[3] Thereafter he was included in the panel of eighteen umpires selected to officiate in matches during the 2011 Cricket World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He went on to stand in the 2nd Quarter-final of the tournament between India and Australia in Ahmedabad on 24 March 2011.
Erasmus was a part of the panel of twenty umpires selected to stand in matches during the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.[4] He was an on-field umpire in the tournament opener between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch on 14 February 2015. He went on to officiate as the TV umpire in the tournament Final between Australia and New Zealand in Melbourne on 29 March 2015.
