Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum attached to Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (also known as LPML) is a public boarding high school in Lviv, Ukraine. It is usually considered to be one of the best educational institutions in the western part of the country. As of 2012 and 2015 Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum has been ranked first among high schools in Ukraine by Focus magazine.[1] [2] The school is well-known for organizing multiple country-wide competitions in mathematics, physics ("Levenia") and programming ("Bober"), including Ukrainian version of the international Mathematical Kangaroo contest.

General

Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum offers two programs their students : Physics+Mathematics (also called PhysMath concentration available for application after year 7/8) and Chemistry+Biology ( known as ChemBiol major available after completion of year 8). In the past, Mathematics+Geography, a third concentration was also available which now has unfortunately been closed due to insufficient enrolments each year. [3]

Students of the lyceum are frequently among the top participants at the National Olympiads. LPML students are usually also a part of Ukrainian team at various International Olympiads, including Physics (IPhO), Mathematics (IMO) and Chemistry (IChO).

Application

Those who wish to study at LPML usually have to pass the examination. Enrolment is held on competitive basis. Exceptions apply for students who have been subject Olympiad winners at regional level prior admission. Average annual enrolment ranges from 110 to 130 students with around 30 per class. Usually 30 ChemBiol and 90 PhysMath students (60 - upon completion of secondary school year 7 and 30 after grade 8) are intaken.

Student Life

Residents of cities other than Lviv have an opportunity to get valuable experiences at LPML which is offering student hall fully renovated in 2013. Students are settled by gender (left and right parts of the building) in spacious rooms suitable for 2-4. Age, major and other factors are considered during roommates selection process. Three floors of each block allow to accommodate more than 100 students which counts to around 25% of LPML population.

Mandatory meals are provided to all the students: 4 times daily (including breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner except Sundays with only 3) throughout the week for permanent hall residents as well as Monday to Friday lunches for non-residents.

Discipline, safety and decent behaviour are among LPML high priorities. Since most students are not adults, extra safety control is applied as a regulation. Students can always approach teachers, headmaster, and 24-hour shift nannies/security guards for any assistance. Additionally hall residents are not allowed to leave the hall between 22.00 and 7.00 without prior approval.

LPML students have vast opportunities for self-development through electives and extracurricular activities organized by the management or themselves. Starting from cultural trips to Ukrainian seesights, national heritage or beautiful nature spots and ending with house-warming dinners with musical instrumental or arts performances, students have the ability to become effective, innovative, well-rounded personalities.
