Plot
Set in 1911 at the end of the Edwardian period, Jessica Medlicott (Hepburn) is an aging grande dame, formerly an actress of the London theatre, accused of having seduced and abandoned her much-younger ex-fiancé who is suing her for £50,000 for breach of promise. She retains the services of the greatest barrister in the Empire (Olivier) to defend her, a man she seduced and abandoned 40 years earlier who has remained hopelessly in love with her ever since.
