London Buses route 83 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Golders Green station and Ealing Hospital, it is operated by Metroline.

History

Route 83 is a long route running from Golders Green station to Ealing Hospital via Hendon, Wembley, Alperton, North Ealing, Ealing Broadway, West Ealing and Hanwell, but in the 1940s it continued to Hayes North via the present route 195. The Ealing Broadway to Hayes section was withdrawn and replaced by route 105 in 1958.

In 1961, route 83 was extended from Ealing Broadway to Heathrow Airport Central bus station via routes 65 and 91. This section was discontinued in 1964.

In 1965, route 83 was extended to Brentford replacing route 255; this section was withdrawn in 1968 and replaced by route E1. In 1980s it was extended via Uxbridge Road to the new Ealing Hospital. It also swapped with route 183 in the Hendon area running via Hendon Central station instead of via The Bell.

Route 83 has always been operated from Alperton garage using double deckers including AEC Routemasters, MCW Metrobuses, and ex-London Buslines Leyland Olympians. Twenty new Northern Counties Palatine bodied Volvo Olympians bought by First London for the route in 1999, were among the last non-low-floor buses bought for use in London.[1] It later received low-floor Volvo B7TLs. Up to their closure, Hendon and Hanwell garages also provided buses for this route.

Upon being re-tendered, the route was retained by First London, with a new contract commencing on 12 September 2009 with new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TLs. The Sunday daytime service was increased to every 10 minutes, with the daily evening service increased to every 12 minutes.[2]

On 22 June 2013, route 83 was included in the sale of First London's Alperton garage to Metroline.[3][4]
