LoliRock is a French animated television series produced by Marathon Media and the Zodiak Kids. It first aired in France on September 23, 2014, and is also broadcast on Disney Channel France. It is created by Jean Louis-Vandestoc and written by Madellaine Paxson,[1]

The show combines elements of fantasy which are inspired by the magical girl genre. Music is emphasized in marketing, with five music videos per season released outside the show. The title itself, LoliRock, comes from the name of the band, and according to an interview on the official site, it is a play on "LOL," "i" as in the Spanish conjunction meaning "and", and the word "rock."

The show is currently airing throughout Europe and is planned for two seasons.[2]

Origins

The show is about a trio of girls who form a band who are publicly pop rockstars. LoliRock is an Anime-influenced animation series inspired by Sailor Moon, the legendary Magical Girl Japanese Anime TV Series of the 1990s. The tone of the series is a mixture of humor and magic in a very kind "magical girl". It also contains numerous references to Japanese series such as Sailor Moon and the saga Pretty Cure. Moreover, the series LoliRock is the first French series of the genre, "magical girl". It was created in order to repeat the success of a previous series by the same studio called Totally Spies! Thanks to the themes: music, magic, humor, fantasy, action, adventure, mystery and friendship.

The Plot

Iris is a spirited teenage girl with a beautiful voice and a desire to help others and she lives in Sunny Bay. However, when she sings, strange events happen. Meanwhile, Talia and Auriana are searching for the lost princess of Ephedia, and decide to do an audition for all the girls in town. Encouraged by her best friend, Iris ends up auditioning, but her power destroys the room, and she is attacked by two strangers. Talia and Auriana come to help her, and explain to her that she is a princess with magical powers, that must save her kingdom from the clutches of Gramorr. The only way to save it is to master her powers, and find the oracle gems of the Royal Crown of Ephedia, which are scattered across Earth. They become best friends and they form a all girl band called "LoliRock", but they also fight as magical girl warrior princess.[3]
