28 ships were wrecked in Bridlington Bay, Yorkshire during the Great Gale of 1871. Over 50 sailors were drowned in the calamity, despite rescue efforts by the townspeople. The local lifeboat, RNLB Robert Whitworth, was also lost with 6 of her 9 crew.[3] |
