List of largest art museums in the world
This list of largest art museums ranks art museums and museums thought to contain mostly pieces of art by total exhibition space.
Methodology
Only gallery space is to be considered, not be confused with the total space inside the building (which is generally twice as large).
The museum should be mainly composed of human made artifacts with an important aesthetical dimension (i.e. natural history museums and technique museums are to be excluded, as well as palaces whose purpose is primarily historical and architectural and secondarily as an art collection).
Museums contained inside a bigger institution cannot be considered as one entity if they are not at the same location.
Museums are to be considered large above 8,000 m2 (86 000 sq ft). If the museum has a global reputation (as shown by investments, frequentation, professional articles), it is to be considered large above 4,000 m2 (43 000 sq ft).
