List of United States post office murals
The list of United States post office murals is a list of murals produced in the United States through the Section of Painting and Sculpture, later called the Section of Fine Arts, of the Treasury Department. Produced from 1934 to 1943, the murals were intended to boost the morale of the American people suffering from the effects of the Depression by depicting uplifting subjects the people knew and loved.[1] The purpose of this federal project was in contrast to other government arts projects that were intended to provide economic relief,[1] including the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (1935–1943), the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) of the Civil Works Administration (1933–1934), and the Treasury Relief Art Project (TRAP) (1935–1939).
Murals were commissioned through competitions open to all artists in the United States.[2] Almost 850 artists were commissioned to paint 1371 murals, most of which were installed in post offices.[3] 162 of the artists were women and three were African American.[3] The murals were funded as a part of the cost of the construction of new post offices, with 1% of the cost set aside for artistic enhancements.[3][upper-alpha 1]
The Section of Painting and Sculpture asked artists to paint in an "American scene" style, depicting ordinary citizens in a realistic manner.[2] Abstract and modern art styles were discouraged. Artists were also encouraged to produce works that would be appropriate to the communities where they were to be located and to avoid controversial subjects.[2]
The murals are the subject of efforts by the United States Postal Service to preserve and protect them. This is particularly important and problematical as some of them have disappeared or deteriorated. And some are ensconced in buildings that are worth far less than the artwork.[5]

- ↑ “Often mistaken for WPA art, post office murals were actually executed by artists working for the Section of Fine Arts. Commonly known as 'the Section,' it was established in 1934 and administered by the Procurement Division of the Treasury Department. Headed by Edward Bruce, a former lawyer, businessman, and artist, the Section’s main function was to select art of high quality to decorate public buildings if the funding was available. By providing decoration in public buildings, the art was made accessible to all people.”[4]
