List of new wave artists and bands

There is no consensus for whether early alternative rock or post-punk are subgenres of new wave and thus whether acts associated with these genres belong on this list. There is also no consensus if first-wave punk rock acts circa 1976–1978 belong on this list nor sourcing criteria and level of notoriety needed for list inclusion. - See talk pages

The following is a list of music acts that began late 1970s through the middle 1980s that were new wave acts or had some elements of the genre in their music.

Individual members of new wave groups are not listed unless their solo work has had elements of new wave music. Band members often work on solo projects because they want to explore different music styles. Also not listed are acts associated with the resurgences and revivals of the genre that have occurred from the 1990s onward. Acts associated with these revivals are found in the List of post-punk revival bands article.

Groups and artists with aliases are listed by the first letter in their name, and individuals are listed by their surname.
