First game | Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (1993) |
Created by | Jane Jensen |
Voiced by | Tim Curry (GK1, GK3) |
Portrayed by | Dean Erickson (GK2)[1] |
Gabriel Knight is the central protagonist of the series. Aside from his double duties as a novelist and supernatural investigator, Gabriel is also the proprietor of St. George's Rare Books in his hometown of New Orleans. Charismatic, sardonic, and intuitive, he has a way with women that has at times proven to impede the progress of his cases. When the series starts, Gabriel is a down on his luck author whose instinctive drive to solve a killing spree ultimately leads him to discover his family's ancient heritage as a line of the Schattenjäger (Shadow Hunters). Upon the conclusion of his first case, Gabriel moves to Bavaria to reluctantly take up his birthright. His next two cases as a Schattenjäger are chronicled in the second and third games of the series.
By GK3 Gabriel has taken on the job of a Schattenjäger full-time. He is hired by Prince James of Albany (in the GK3 graphic novel) to protect his infant son, Charlie, from a group of vampires called "The Night Visitors", later revealed to be the "Adepts of the Holy Blood". Charlie is kidnapped as Gabriel becomes paralyzed (through unknown means). He follows the kidnappers to a train where he is knocked out, waking up at the Couiza station and making his way to Rennes-le-Château where he begins to investigate the area and tour-group staying at the Rennes Hotel.
Eventually, it is revealed that Prince James is a blood-descendant of Jesus and Gabriel confronts the Adepts in the rebuilt, underground Temple of Solomon. In the aftermath of his battle with the demon Asmodeus and the death of Montreaux (the head-vampire), Gabriel, Mosely and Mesmi discover the body of Jesus that is then carried off by Emilio Baza through a shining portal. When Gabriel returns to the hotel he discovers that Grace has left for India. It is also revealed that Gabriel is a descendant of a Roman soldier who nailed Jesus to the cross, and who accepted the duties as Schattenjäger for himself and his descendants as penance. The Schattenjäger talisman and dagger being made by blessed steel turned to gold after having been touched to Jesus' lips while he was on the cross.
Grace Nakimura
Franklin Mosely
Franklin Mosely (voiced by Mark Hamill in the first game, and David Thomas in the third) is Gabriel's best friend.
In Sins of the Fathers, Mosely works as a detective for the New Orleans Police Department. He dismisses the supernatural aspects of the Voodoo Murders that Gabriel is investigating, but as the facts of the case become undeniable, he proves to be a strong ally in helping to solve the case.
In Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, Mosely has traveled to France to participate in a tour of Rennes-le-Château, which seems odd to Gabriel, who suspects that he is up to something. In this game, Mosely is a more comical character, and at times, Gabriel takes advantage of him for his own gain. However, Mosely is still a competent cop, and helps to investigate a crime scene, as well as accompanying Gabriel in the final dungeon.
Mosely and Gabriel have a playfully antagonistic relationship, with Mosely often ending up as the butt of Gabriel's jokes. He harbors a secret crush for Grace, and takes offense at Gabriel's demeaning attitude towards her.
Gerde Hull
Gerde Hull (voiced by Mary Kay Bergman in the first game, and played by Andrea Martin in the second) is the caretaker at Gabriel's ancestral home, Schloss Ritter.
When Gabriel first meets Gerde in Sins of the Fathers, she is an anxious, enthusiastic, and misguidedly optimistic young woman. Her eagerness to help Gabriel to find his great-uncle Wolfgang is indicative of her love for him, and after Wolfgang's death, she agrees to stay and help Gabriel for the sake of Wolfgang's memory.
Still grieving at the time of The Beast Within, Gerde presents a marked sadness, and is hostile towards Grace, whom she thinks is trying to supplant her as Gabriel's research assistant. After eventually warming to Grace, the two women become allies in order to save Gabriel's life.
Gerde does not appear in the third game, which is set in France.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Malia Gedde
Malia Gedde (voiced by Leilani Jones) is Gabriel's love interest in Sins of the Fathers. A wealthy African-American socialite, she is reserved, and she shuns both the public eye and Gabriel's initial attempts to woo her. After reluctantly submitting to Gabriel's advances, they fall in love. However, Gabriel comes to suspect that Malia is a member of the Voodoo cartel that is responsible for a spree of murders in New Orleans. At the end of the game, the player, as Gabriel, must decide Malia's fate. This choice affects the outcome of the game.
Dr. John
Dr. John (voiced by Michael Dorn) is a Voodoo scholar from Haiti, who curates the Voodoo Museum in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He is happy for the opportunity to impart his extensive knowledge to Gabriel, but reveals little of his personal life. He owns a python, which Gabriel suspects might have been present at the scenes of the Voodoo Murders. Gabriel later comes to discover that Dr. John is more than just a historian...

The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery
Baron Friedrich von Glower
Baron Friedrich von Glower (Peter J. Lucas) is the charismatic founder of the Royal Bavarian Hunting Lodge, an exclusive gentleman's social and hunting club. An observer by nature, Von Glower spares little detail about his personal life and history, preferring to glean what information he can regarding Gabriel's personal life and intentions. He immediately takes a (perhaps romantic) shine to Gabriel, and takes him under his wing despite criticism from the other members of the lodge, particularly Baron von Zell. Von Glower is governed by a philosophy similar to Primitivism and Hedonism, and chooses each club member by how well he believes they will adapt and adhere to this philosophy.
Baron Garr von Zell
Baron Garr Von Zell (Richard Raynesford) is a banker from a wealthy family, and was at one time Von Glower's protegé. He is rather arrogant and quick to anger, but the other members of the club note that he was not always like this – in fact, his personality changed very rapidly. Gabriel comes to suspect that there might be a supernatural reason behind this change.
Doktor Stephen Klingmann
Doktor Stephen Klingmann (Wolf Muser) is a zoologist and the head of the mammal section at Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich. He has a special interest in wolves, as evidenced by the various pictures in his office. Despite his professional interest in animals, it seems that he is also a member of the hunting lodge, which strikes Gabriel as rather suspicious. Klingmann disapproves of Gabriel's informality, and is reluctant to help him with his enquiries into the local wolf killings.
King Ludwig II
King Ludwig II (Russell Mitchell) does not appear in person, on account of being dead, but does appear in various flashbacks and dream sequences. As the last king of Bavaria, he was seen as eccentric, obsessed with opulent fairy-tale castles and the operas of his close friend Richard Wagner. It seems that he suffered a change in personality, and became a recluse, after being bitten by a wolf on a hunting trip. He was therefore declared insane, and shortly thereafter died in mysterious circumstances. There seems to be some sort of connection between Ludwig's life and the mutilation killings taking place in the present day.
Minor Characters

- Frau Hogel (Diane Frank) is Übergrau's secretary.

- Fink (Ronald E. House) is the grumpy desk sergeant at the police station in Prinzregentenplatz.
- Otto Preiss (Clabe Hartley) is a member of the hunting lodge and a high-profile lawyer. However, he prefers to spend his time womanizing rather than working.
- Frank Hennemann (Edmund L. Shaff), another member of the club, is a politician, who was once tipped to become Chancellor of Germany, but is now an alcoholic.
- Hermann von Aigner (Clement von Franckenstein) is the final member of the club, and is the owner of a meat processing company. He prefers to keep his personal affairs private, but does seem to be connected to one of the victims of the killings.

Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
Madeline Buthane
Madeline Buthane (voiced by Jennifer Hale) is the leader of a tour group in Rennes-le-Château, who is later revealed to have her own agenda. She has red hair, smokes frequently, and appears to attract the attention of most of the men around her. She flirts with Gabriel and Mosely in order to extract information from them, but has a rather hateful relationship with Grace. By the end of the game, she seems to have genuinely fallen for Gabriel, who is attracted to her physically, but rejects her advances.
Emilio Baza
Emilio Baza (voiced by Billy West) is a Middle-Eastern man who is a strict vegetarian and claims to be a Muslim, although Gabriel suspects that he is lying about his true identity. Gabriel notices some odd behavior from Baza during the course of the tour, and suspects that he might be responsible for the kidnapping of Prince James's baby.
Baza seems to possess an acute knowledge of the events around him, and leaves subtle hints around Rennes-le-Château to help Gabriel and Grace.
John Wilkes
John Wilkes (voiced by Richard Doyle) is an Australian who believes that Bérenger Saunière discovered lost treasure in a cave hidden somewhere beneath Rennes-le-Château. He is on a serious search for the treasure, going so far as to use a seismic survey machine, which becomes the butt of ridicule from Gabriel. Wilkes is quite arrogant and constantly tries to hit on Madeline, with little success. He later turns his interests towards Grace, who plays along in order to learn about Wilkes's findings.
Lady Lily Howard & Estelle Stiles
Lady Lily Howard & Estelle Stiles (voiced by Samantha Eggar and Carolyn Seymour) are two British women who grew up in the same village together: Estelle's accent indicates that this was in Northern England. Estelle is tall and thin and rather shy, whereas Lily is short and plump and quite the diva.
Estelle worked in London as a nurse before going to see one of Lily's plays, whereupon the two apparently became friends. After Estelle's father died, she inherited a cottage, where the two lived together. Hearing that a Chinese archaeologist named Dr Wen had discovered a cache of Egyptian artifacts in a cave near Rennes-le-Château, the pair quickly headed to France on their own treasure hunt.
Estelle is very fond of Lily, despite being treated with little respect. Their strange companionship leads to Gabriel and Grace suspecting that they are a lesbian couple: Gabriel notes that there is only one bed in their hotel room.
Vittorio Buchelli
Vittorio Buchelli (voiced by Joe Lala) is an Italian tourist, who is rather irritable, and is skeptical about whether the treasure really exists. He tells Gabriel that he traveled to Rennes-le-Château by train from Naples, but it is later proven that he was lying. This is not the only suspicious behavior we see from him.
Prince James (Stewart) of Albany
Prince James of Albany (voiced by Simon Templeman) claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. He hires Gabriel to investigate the kidnapping of his infant son. Upon discovering that Gabriel has followed the kidnappers to Couiza, he becomes certain that the kidnapping was orchestrated by the Priory of Sion and thus involves the Freemasons in the investigation.
Mallory & McDougall
Mallory & McDougall (voiced by Tom Kane and Simon Templeton) are Prince James's bodyguards, who are sent to assist with the investigation of the kidnapping of his son. Both speak with a notable Scottish accent. It seems that McDougall is the muscle of the duo.
Abbé Arnaud
Abbé Arnaud (voiced by Gregg Berger) is a priest and a member of the Priory of Sion, who lives on the grounds of St. Mary Magdalene's Church, where he gives information about the history of the church to tourists. He plays a minor role, mainly showing the Priory's side and giving some hints to the puzzles.
Larry Chester
Larry Chester (voiced by Corey Burton) is a British man living in a cottage in the Rennes area. He tells Gabriel that he is taking a sabbatical from his job as a prep school teacher in Manchester, in order to write a book about the Knights Templar. However, there is more to him than first meets the eye.
Excelsior Montreaux
Excelsior Montreaux (voiced by John de Lancie) is the owner of the Château de Serres vineyard. However, Grace suspects that there is more going on at his estate than just wine-making.
Asmodeus
Asmodeus is a demon, summoned at the climax of the game in order to foil Gabriel's attempts to recover Prince James's son. Asmodeus appears in numerous images and references throughout the game, most notably in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Rennes-le-Chateau.
Minor characters
- Jean (voiced by Philippe Bergeron) is the day receptionist at the hotel.
- Simone (voiced by Russi Taylor) is the night receptionist at the hotel.

- The Bartender (voiced by Joe Lala) doesn't speak English.
- The Taxi-driver (voiced by Rene Auberjonois) drives Gabriel from Couiza to Rennes-le-Château before the start of the game. He can be questioned later on by Gabriel.
- The Train-station worker (voiced by Joe Lala) only appears at the beginning of the game and points Gabe to Rennes-le-Château.
- The Vineyard woman is an old woman who apparently works at the Serres wine press. She only speaks French and manages to frighten Grace. It is possible that she is Montreaux's wife.
- Mesmi (voiced by Corey Burton) is Prince James' assistant.
