The FA Community Shield, previously known as the Charity Shield, is a competition in English football comprising a single match. It is traditionally played at the beginning of the English football season.[1] Started in 1908, it has been played each year since except for breaks due to the First and Second World Wars.[2] Until 1913, the matches were between the champions of The Football League and the Southern Football League, when the match was changed to become a game between professionals and amateurs players.[3] Following the break due to World War I, the match returned in 1920 with a game between the champions of the Football League First and Second Divisions.[4] In 1921 it changed again to become a match between the Football League Champion and the winner of the FA Cup,[5] switching several more times between the amateur/professional and league champion/FA Cup winner matches during the 1920s. From 1930 onwards it settled to a standard fixture between the FA Cup winner and the Football League Champion,[6] except for in 1950 when the England World Cup squad played the England team who toured Canada that summer.[7] and in 1961 when double-winning Tottenham Hotspur played an "F.A. Selected XI" described in The Times as being an "England team masquerading".[8]
In 1974 the match was moved to its permanent place as the opener to the English Football League, and played at Wembley Stadium. It has been held at the English national stadium ever since, except while it was being redeveloped, during which the matches were switched to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.[1] Manchester United are the most successful team, having won the title on 20 occasions. They are also the team which has most frequently appeared in the match, a total of 29 times. The only other teams to have won it on more than ten occasions are Arsenal and Liverpool.
