Edwin de Vries' vader, die eveneens acteur was, kwam uit een a-religieus maar wel bewust joods gezin en maakte in de oorlog deel uit van een verzetsgroep. 'De ontwikkeling van mijn joodse bewustzijn is vergelijkbaar met die van Chaja: ik rebelleerde, maakte deel uit van de studentenbeweging en sprak net als iedereen over de revolutie. Ik heb nog meegedaan aan de bezetting van het Maagdenhuis. Pas door Leedvermaak van Judith Herzberg werd ik mij bewust van mijn eigen joods-zijn.'

Having scored his first league goal in May against Willem II, he netted a Ajax's only goal in the Champions League game at Maccabi Tel Aviv, which Ajax lost in dramatic fashion. That fixture was a special one for De Ridder, who is Jewish and has an Israeli mother.
