Lichess is an Internet chess server created by Thibault Duplessis, a French programmer. The software running Lichess and the design are open source under the MIT license.[5]
Features
The main feature of the site is supporting games of live and correspondence chess against other players of different time controls.[6][7] The website does not require registration as anyone can play anonymously, for registered players however, Lichess employs a rating system, as well as the ability to compete in tournaments, post in the forums, and use the Stockfish chess engine for analysis of played games. Registered and non registered users can also play against the engine.[8]
Lichess has a tactics training feature, including checkmate, chess coordinate, and chess opening puzzles.[9][10]
As well as the ability to play blindfold chess, the site supports the following chess variants:[11][1]
- Crazyhouse [12]
- Chess960
- King of the Hill
- Losing chess (Antichess)
- Atomic chess
- Three-check chess
- Racing Kings
- Dunsany's chess, sometimes known as Horde chess. The Lichess variant is different from standard Horde chess.
Lichess has features to assist visually impaired people to play chess on the site.[13] The website has a chess puzzle-based CAPTCHA system.[14][15]
The website also enables streaming via twitch.tv, hitbox.tv and YouTube, and features[16] many established players such as Grandmaster Eric Hansen, International Master Greg Shahade, International Master John Bartholomew, amongst many other online chess celebrities.
On February 11, 2015, an official Lichess mobile app was released for Android devices.[11] An app for mobile devices running iOS was released on March 4, 2015.[17]
The signature feature of Lichess is its no-advertisement policy, along with continuous development on the website's features and mechanics on monthly, weekly, or even daily basis.[18]
As of 28 September 2015, lichess.org was ranked as the 6,803rd most popular website globally by Alexa, with most of visitors coming from United States, Iran, Russia, France and Spain.[4] On the same day, Lichess was ranked second only to Chess.com as one of the most popular online chess servers in the world.[19]
