Lee Tae-min (hangul: 이태민; born July 18, 1993[1]), most often credited as Taemin, is a South Korean singer, dancer and actor. Debuted as a member of the group Shinee in May 2008, and began his acting career in 2009 in MBC's comedy Tae Hee, Hye Kyo, Ji Hyun as Junsu.[2]

Taemin made his debut as a solo artist on August 15, 2014 with his first EP titled Ace, released on August 18, 2014.[3]

Early life

Taemin was born on July 18, 1993, in Seoul, South Korea. In 2005 he was discovered by SM Entertainment after a successful audition on SM Open Weekend Audition Casting. In 2007, he studied Chinese in Beijing, China.

Career

In 2008, Taemin debuted with SHINee as the main dancer and a sub vocalist.[2] The group released their first mini-album, Replay on May 22 debuting at #10 and reached the #8 position on the charts.[4] The first television presentation of the group occurred in May 25, 2008 in the program SBS's Inkigayo.[2]

Taemin made his acting debut in 2009 in MBC's comedy "Tae Hee, Hye Kyo, Ji Hyun" as Junsu.[5] Also in 2009 appeared on television shows such as Idol Maknae Rebellion as a guest next to your Onew, Jonghyun and Key in several episodes, along with members of other groups, including Dongho, Shorry J, Jinwoon, Yunhwa, Seunghyun and Mir.

In December 2011, Taemin took part as a voice actor for the Korean animated movie called The Outback as the main character, Johnny, a white koala turned hero, along with fellow labelmate, Girls' Generation's Sunny.[6]

In January 2012, Taemin joined Immortal Songs 2.[7] Taemin performed "Mapo Terminal" from Silver Bell Sister and competed with musical actor Im Taekyung, both garnered 376 votes.[8] On September 19, 2012, Taemin released his first OST, "U", for the drama To The Beautiful You. On October 16, 2012 it was announced that Taemin, alongside Super Junior's Eunhyuk and Super Junior-M's Henry, Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon, and EXO's Kai and Luhan would participate as a 6-member dance team for the Veloster theme song, "Maxstep", the collaboration album between SM Entertainment and Hyundai. A video teaser of the song shown at the PYL Younique Show on October 17, 2012.[9]

In April 2013, SM Entertainment revealed that Taemin would be the couple of Son Na-eun in the reality show "We Got Married", replacing the previous couple Kwanghee and Sunhwa.[10] In June 2013 he featured in Super Junior-M's Henry solo song "Trap" alongside Super Juniors's Kyuhyun.[11] In December of that year he participated in the soundtrack of the series Prime Minister and I, playing the "Steps" song.[12] The song was officially launched on January 7, 2014.[13]

On February 8, 2014, he returned to Immortal Song 2, playing the song "Wait a Minute" of Joo Hyun-mi.[14] On July 25 it was announced that Taemin would be making his official solo debut in August.[3] The official music video for his title song "Danger" came out on August 15.[15] On August 18, Lee Taemin released his solo mini album "Ace" which contains six songs.[16] The EP topped the Gaon chart.

On February 3, 2015, was confirmed for the cast of the first season of the "Match Made in Heaven Returns".[17] In March 23, it announced its participation in the variety show Off to School.[18] On June 1, released the song "That Name", in collaboration with Jonghyun, for the OST of KBS2's Who Are You: School 2015.[19][20] The song debuted at #36 on the Gaon Singles Chart.[21]

In September, 2015, it was rumored that Taemin is preparing a solo comeback, which was later also confirmed at a concert by himself.[22] SM Entertainment has confirmed his comeback on January, 15, 2016, one day after Shinee's Key mentioned the comeback in a winning speech at the Seoul Music Awards.[23]

Personal life

In March 2011, he transferred to Hanlim Multi Art School from his previous school, Chungdam High School to accommodate his hectic schedule for Shinee’s Japanese advancement.[24] He graduated in February 2012, but was unable to make it to the ceremony due to Shinee activities.[25] He is currently majoring in Musical and Film at Myongji University.[26] He practices Roman Catholicism.[27]
