Land Instruments are specialists in the design and manufacture of monitors and analyzers for industrial infrared non-contact temperature measurement, combustion efficiency and environmental pollutant emissions with headquarters in the United Kingdom and has offices and distributors worldwide.[1]

Early History

[2]The origins of the company go back to approximately 1845 in Sheffield, the cutlery capital of England, where 100 years working within the electroplate trade began. In c. 1860 Harriss & Land were manufacturers of Britannia Metal and forks and spoons – the Land in this case being Henry Land who died in c. 1895 and is buried in the Sheffield General Cemetery. Tom Land took over the business from his father which had by then become Henry Land & Co dealing with silver plate & gilding. In 1890 under the name of Land & Oxley, the company became very successful as a manufacturer of EPBM, spoons & forks & table knives. By 1906 the company had become T. Land & Son after Frank Land joined his father in the business which moved to a bright new factory in Queens Road, Sheffield in 1908. From 1914 – 18, as the country faced World War 1, the factory was turned over to war work.

In 1946 Tom Land joined the family firm and developed a new department within it which focused on industrial instruments. As both areas of the business continued to perform well it was decided to split them and Land Pyrometers Ltd. was born. 1947 is given as the founding date for when Tom transformed the Company into a hi-tech business developing products for industrial temperature measurement. In 1963 Land Pyrometers sold their Queens Road factory in Sheffield and moved to a new purpose-built factory in Dronfield and a new chapter in the history of the Company was born.

Current Day

In June 2006 LAND became part of the Process & Analytical Instruments Division of AMETEK, Inc., a global supplier of high-end analytical instrumentation, with headquarters in Paoli, Pennsylvania, USA. AMETEK has approximately 11,000 employees, with over 80 manufacturing sites worldwide.[3]

Land has provided a number of innovative solutions to temperature measurement for a variety of industries, including flu screening at airports during the recent avian flu[4] and swine flu[5] epidemics. Land also developed one of the first portable thermal imagers which was successfully used for real time analysis of the jet engines on the Thrust SSC Land Speed Record breaking car.[6]

Awards & Recognition

In October 2013, Land Instruments International was selected as the runner up for the British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEAs) 2013 under the Design Team of the Year category for the design of the Spot Thermometer.[7][8]

The Quality Management System at LAND Instruments International is approved to ISO 9001. With the recognition of accuracy as the foundation of good product design - the LAND laboratory was the first, in 1970, to be accredited for the issue of calibration certificates for thermal measurements. Again in 2001 LAND were the first to meet the requirements of ISO 17025 - and remains one of the world's leading calibration laboratories today.

The latest product which LAND launched is the Spot Thermometer.[9] It is a stand-alone infrared pyrometer design with advanced integrated processing capabilities. Combining Ethernet, Modbus TCP, Video, Analog and Alarm Outputs, SPOT makes all these conveniently available to the operator.

Infrared Temperature Measurement

LAND Instruments International is the world leader in the design and application of infrared temperature measurement for industry. It is known both as an innovator and a manufacturer of high quality precision radiation thermometers and thermometer systems. Land has over 60 years of experience in temperature measurement. Its products are used extensively in applications as diverse as steel, glass, electronics, mineral processing, power generation, utility and aircraft gas turbines, and a wide range of other industries.

Infrared temperature measurement product range includes:

Combustion & Environmental Monitoring

Combustion & Environmental section specializes in the design, manufacture and marketing of combustion and environmental monitoring instrumentation. Pioneered by an initial interest in the efficiency of coal fired combustion processes, serious development of CO monitors soon established Land Instruments International in this field.

With the recent increase in environmental concerns, the company has continued to develop and produce a range of high quality environmental gas analysers for monitoring and complying with worldwide legislation. Most LAND products for environmental emissions applications carry both European certifications in the form of MCerts and TÜV approval. Their products are designed to meet the requirements of the latest European standards such as EN-12567 parts 1, 2 and 3 plus QAL-1 compliance.

Combustion and environmental monitoring product range includes:

Customer support and sales are handled by LAND offices throughout the world. LAND Distributors and Representatives offer sales and support advice in most countries of the world.
