Lambda Phi Xi

Lambda Phi Xi (Greek: ΛΦΞ, also known as Lady Xi) is a non-profit, ^[2] social and service multicultural sorority founded on January 27, 2004 at Michigan State University and Purdue University Calumet.

History

Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority was established in the spring of 2004. Our Founding Ladies desired a Sisterhood and felt the need to create an organization that both of their respective Schools were lacking. The founding ladies wanted an all-inclusive organization that focused on the idea of the complete woman, while at the same time creating a multicultural sisterhood whose focus would lie with issues surrounding women living in the postmillennial era. While their Vision was strong, the road to building the organization they longed for would not be easy. The Five Founding Ladies pulled together to lay the Foundation of Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority. These ladies felt that their organization should hold true to the Ideals of Educational Achievement, Strength through Diversity as well as Service Excellence and Sisterhood Unparalleled. While at times it proved quite challenging, they remained devoted to the task of bringing Lambda Phi Xi to realization, and on January 27, 2004 what had once been held as a dream, finally became a reality. These Five Ladies would be known as the Amethyst Founders of Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority, with Lambda Phi Xi having joint Founding birthplaces at Michigan State University and Purdue University Calumet respectively.

Having their new Sisterhood composed, The Amethyst Founders embarked on the journey of spreading their Illustrious Sisterhood to other institutions throughout the Midwest and Nation. While the first year of the Sorority held much joy and excitement, it also proved quite arduous for our Five Amethyst Founders. Through Expansion and Membership Intake, Four Ladies emerged during the first year of Lambda Phi Xi’s existence that helped take the Sorority to new heights. These new Lady Xi's were bestowed the title of Onyx Founders; since without all of their hard work and tenacity, Lambda Phi Xi would not be what it is today, thus giving these Four Ladies Honorary Founders status.

Once all Nine Founding Ladies came together, they were in awe of what they had created and realized Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority would be unstoppable. Holding steadfast to the pillars that make this organization distinct, these Nine Ladies transformed Lambda Phi Xi from the vision held by two, into the organization that it is today, cherished by many. Lambda Phi Xi became incorporated on June 11, 2005, forever changing its name to Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Through our Illustrious Sisterhood, Lady Xi’s hope to show the world that Diversity can be a masterpiece. ^[3]

Pillars, Purpose & Vision

The founding principles of Lambda Phi Xi are sisterhood, education, personal values and strength. ^[4]

Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. creates a diverse sisterhood where women of all natures, regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, economic standing, age, size, or sexual preference can come together in a positive, nurturing environment, uniting to advance the ideals of equality, multiculturalism, educational achievement, unsurpassed strength and personal values.^[5]

The ultimate vision of Lambda Phi Xi is to prepare its members to be productive, contributing, citizens of society by instilling in them the qualities needed to be role models for women of the 21st Century. As “Lady Xi’s” we strive to exude the characteristics of both, True Ladies and Honorable Leaders, on our campuses and in our communities. Our aim to intertwine our numerous cultures into a single masterpiece of diversity remains at the forefront of our organization, and through our hard work and dedication, it is our hope to uplift and engage those around us to see the rewards of a being an active participant in a multicultural society. Finally, as always we continue to remain Ladies above woman, and Leaders above many. ^[6]

Philanthropy

Sorors of Lambda Phi Xi are strongly dedicated to reaching excellence through service. It is our hope that through our service initiatives, we take steps towards the enhancement and enrichment of our respective campuses and surrounding communities. Our National Philanthropy is Girl Scouts of the United States of America. ^[7]

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) is a youth organization for girls in the United States and American girls living abroad. GSUSA aims to empower girls and to help teach values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, character, sisterhood, confidence, and citizenship through activities including camping, community service, learning first aid, and earning badges by acquiring practical skills. Girl Scouts' achievements are recognized through rank advancement and by various special awards such as the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

Membership is organized according to grade, with activities designed for each level. The GSUSA is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It accepts girls from any background.

A 1994 Chronicle of Philanthropy poll showed that the Girl Scouts was ranked by the public as the eighth "most popular charity/non-profit in America" of over 100 charities. It describes itself as "the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls“.

In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others. ^[8]

Chapters

For a new sorority, Lambda Phi Xi has a strong number of women and shows it. ^[10] Sorors of Lambda Phi Xi take much pride with their sisterhood, what it stands for and their vision. Sometimes with organizations that are already established, students don’t feel that they fit into those organizations. With Lambda Phi Xi, they have the opportunity to create their own. ^[11]
