Jordan Horowitz was set to produce the film for Gilbert Films, and Fred Berger for his own Impostor Pictures, while Lionsgate would handle the domestic distribution of the film.[9] Justin Hurwitz would also reunite with the director to compose the music for the film.[9]
On April 14, 2015, it was announced that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone were in talks to join the film for the lead roles, while it was revealed that the script was written before the film Whiplash.[10] On April 30, both actors Gosling and Stone were confirmed for the lead roles.[1] On July 8, 2015, it was reported that Jessica Rothenberg, Sonoya Mizuno, and Callie Hernandez were added to the cast to play Stone's character's roommates.[8] On July 10, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that J. K. Simmons signed on to reunite with his Whiplash director in the musical film; he would play the role of "Boss."[2] The same day, THR also reported that Finn Wittrock had joined the film to play the role Greg, while producers of the film would be Berger, Gary Gilbert, Horowitz and Marc E. Platt.[3] On August 4, 2015, Rosemarie DeWitt signed on to star in the film playing Sebastian's sister.[5] The same day, John Legend was also added to the cast.[4] On August 10, 2015, Meagen Fay joined the film to play Stone's character's mother.[6] On August 11, 2015, Jason Fuchs signed on to play Carlo, a screenwriter who hits on Stone's actress character.[7]
