Kyle Cheney (born 25 August 1989) is a professional Australian rules football player who plays for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Taken by Melbourne with selection #53 in the 2007 National Draft, Cheney was recruited from North Ballarat, where he finished second in their 2007 best and fairest count. He was traded to Hawthorn after the 2010 season, and then to Adelaide at the end of 2014.
AFL career
Melbourne (2009–2010)
Cheney debuted in the first round of the 2009 season, his second in the AFL.[1] He played 12 matches in 2009 but only two in 2010, after which he was traded to Hawthorn for a third round draft pick. He played his last Melbourne game in an exhibition match against the Brisbane Lions, after being traded.[2][3]
Hawthorn (2011–2014)
In Cheney's first at season at Hawthorn, he played in eight games and kicked his first goal in the AFL against Essendon. He played just six matches in 2012 and four in 2013, but in the latter year he won Box Hill's Best and Fairest in a premiership year for the club.[4] In 2014, Cheney played the opening nine games of the season as a key defender for the injury-hit Hawks, before failing to break into the side for the rest of the season. At the end of the season, he was traded to Adelaide in the last few minutes of the trading period.[5][6]
