Kursk State Medical University (Курский Государственный Медицинский Университет in Russian) is a Russia Government University of higher professional education and ministry on health and social medicine. Kursk State Medical University also known as Kursk State Medical Institute; KSMU; KurskGMU; KurskSMU; Kursk State Government Medical University. The university is listed in the WHO list of world medical schools and also in the International Medical education directory provided by FAIMER .

Established in 1935, Kursk State Medical Academy is one of the largest medical universities in Russia and in Europe (ranked as one of the top 10 best Russian Medical Universities). KSMU was also the first University in Russia to offer students a full Medical training program in the English language (citizens from over 30 countries worldwide are currently studying in the University).

History

On June 22, 1941 in connection with the beginning of the war, peaceful working life of the University was broken, already on October 8, 1941, over 300 staff members and students were evacuated to Alma-Ata. Only on July 5, 1944 the staff members arrived in Kursk from Alma-Ata. In 1945, 34 students graduated from the University.

In 60s and 70s the structure of the institution continued to form, the acceptance of students increased, an evening department was organized. In 1966 the pharmaceutical faculty was opened, in 1972 the preparatory department was organized, in 1976 - a faculty of advanced training for teachers of pharmaceutical and medical schools. New departments were opened at the medical faculty: tuberculosis, roentgen logy and radiology, trauma with orthopedics and field surgery, at the pharmaceutical faculty–organic chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmchemistry, drug technology, pharmaceutical administration and economics. Research and clinical bases of the institution significantly expanded, much attention was paid to training of scientific and pedagogical personnel.

In 80s a new teaching building, houses for teachers, a new sports hall with a shooting gallery, two students hostels were built, the central teaching building was re-equipped. A scientific research Institute of Ecological Medicine was organized on the basis of the Central Research Laboratory.

In 1984 the Kursk State Medical Institute became a higher medical institution of the first category, in 1985 it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, and in 1994 the Institute was given the status of a University.

University

Kursk State Medical University opened in 1935. The university grew and in 1994 it was granted university status. It is now a multidisciplinary medical university and a medical, educational and cultural center in the Central Black Earth and the Kursk region.

In 2004, the decision of the independent public council "European quality" university ranked among the hundred best universities in Russia. Changing the organizational structure and facilities of the University. Today the university: library with literature, more than 500 thousand copies, Institute of EM consultative - diagnostic clinic, medical school, three educational buildings, completed construction of a fourth dental corps, five dormitories, three gymnasiums, an archery range, dining room, cafe and Buffets in educational buildings and dormitories. The University has a license from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation to conduct educational activities. Postgraduate education is realized in the internship, residency, the graduate school. Provide training to 4 specialties doctorate.[1]

The University has trained over 25,000 professionals. Training is carried out by 14 departments. Each year, more than 700 applicants are university students. By 67 departments trained over 5000 students. The University employs 633 teachers, 92 doctors and 333 candidates of science, 2, Honored Worker of Science, 2, Honored Worker of Higher School of Russia, an Honoured Cultural Worker of Russia, 14 Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation, 32 academicians and corresponding member of RANS, MAI, MAN, and other academies, including international ones.

SSU of KurskSMU

Nowadays, the student scientific union of the KSMU is the union of more than 1500 people interested in getting the skills of scientific work and practice and the development of science in this country.Hundreds of students of KSMU work in the spheres of science and innovation. The development of student science and the realization of students in the sphere of innovation are the priorities of the work in KSMU. Naturally, it is not easy to coordinate the work of such an amount of people. This task is imposed on the Board of the SSU of KSMU, with Professor V.A. Korolev at the head. The Chairman of the Union is the four-year student of the Faculty of Medicine Shevchenko N. At the present time there are 13 students in the Union, with their definite duties, among which cooperation with departments and Deans’ offices of the university, public relations, coordination of subject competitions and award of the winners. The student scientific union of KSMU cooperates with the unions of other universities of the Russian Federation and the neighbour states for experience exchange and holding joint scientific conferences and fora. The SSU of KSMU interacts with the young scientists union. So, 'School of Young Scientists’, joint conferences and shows are the results of this interaction. For 75 years the Annual final inter-university scientific conference of students and young scientists has been held. The aims of this event are the following: to figure out the total of scientific work of the university, the realization of projects and to award the winners of different competitions.

Administration of KurskSMU

The University is headed by a rector (now Professor Viktor A. Lazarenko MD PhD habil., Honoured doctor of Russia is in charge). There are also 3-5 vice-rectors. Now there are 3 vice-rectors - Professor Alexander I. Konoplya MD PhD habil. (for teaching and learning work), Professor Pavel V. Kalutsky MD PhD habil. (for scientific work and innovations) and Professor Oleg I. Ohotnikov MD PhD habil. (for curative work and continuing professional development).
