Kulaura (Bengali: কুলাউড়া) is the biggest upazila (subdistrict) of the Moulvibazar District in north-eastern Bangladesh.[1] The total area of this upazila is 545 km2. Hakaluki Haor, the largest marsh wetland in Sylhet and one of the largest in Bangladesh is partially located here.
Geography
Kulaura is located at 24°31′00″N 92°02′00″E / 24.5167°N 92.0333°E. Its total area is 545.73 km2 (211 sq mi) with 58,883 household units.
It is surrounded by Balaganj and Fenchuganj of the Sylhet District to the south, Barlekha upazila to the east, and Rajnagar and Kamalganj upazilas to the west. Tripura of India is located to the southeast. On average, Kiluara rests 54 feet above sea level. Even though the land primarily consists of plains, there are some hilly areas as well. A small part of Kulaura is very low-lying and includes haors (wetlands).
Demographics
At the 1991 Bangladesh census, Kulaura had a population of 339,673, of whom 171,346 were aged 18 or older. Males constituted 51.09% of the population and females 48.91%. Kulaura had an average literacy rate of 28.8% (7+ years) compared to the national average of 32.4%.[2]
