Kuala Nerus is a district and also a parliamentary constituency in Terengganu state, Malaysia. This district, formerly a part of Kuala Terengganu district, was declared on 18 September 2014.
Kuala Nerus' population is over 200,000, and it comprises 39,890 hectares. Significant development in the areas of higher education and housing projects have occurred there in contemporary times.[1] Institutions of higher education include Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, the Institute of Teacher Education Dato Razali Ismail Campus and an industrial training institute. The Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) Teaching Hospital is (as of September 2014) under construction in Kuala Nerus.
The Sultan Mahmud Airport is located within the district, as is the multipurpose Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium.[2]
Politics
The current Member of Parliament for Kuala Nerus is Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali of PAS. Kuala Nerus in turn contributes four seats to the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly, namely
- Tepuh - held by PAS;
- Teluk Pasu - held by PAS;
- Seberang Takir - held by the incumbent Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman of UMNO; and
- Bukit Tunggal - held by PAS.
Tourism
Kuala Nerus has been described as a "popular tourist destination" by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
