Kothagudem is a town in Khammam district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is located in Kothagudem mandal of Kothagudem revenue division.[1] It is located very near to the temple town of Lord Rama, known as Bhadrachalam. It is approximately 40 km from Bhadrachalam. The Railway station was originally named "Bhadrachalam Road", being the closest railway station to Bhadrachalam, an important pilgrimage location of Rama.

Geography

Kothagudem is located at 17°33′00″N 80°37′05″E / 17.55°N 80.618°E / 17.55; 80.618.[2] It has an average elevation of 89 metres (295 ft) above seal level. The North of Kothagudem borders Chhattisgarh state which is approximately 120 km from the town.

Climate

Kothagudem is known for its record high temperatures during summer, often crossing 48 °C (118 °F) mark.[3] It also has two extreme temperatures in the state as it touches 10 °C (50 °F) during winters and 50 °C (122 °F) during summers. In the recent years the temperature has regularly crossed 50 °C (122 °F) mark.

Economy

Kothagudem is the headquarters for Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the coal producing company in Telangana state.

Transport

Road

The National Highway 221 (India), connecting Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh and Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh passes through Kothagudem. Kothagudem bus depot is one of the oldest bus depots in the district.Telangana State Road Transport Corporation plays a vital role in Kothagudem which connects to Hyderabad, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Bhadrachalam, Khammam, Warangal, Godavarikhani, Vijayawada etc. The main Road connects to the Bus station and routes for Coal mines, Singareni Headquarters, Government offices, courts, stadium and many other government buildings etc., named after Mahatma Gandhi as M.G.Road.

Rail

Kothagudem Railway Station is referred as Bhadrachalam Road. This is one of the oldest railway stations in the Telangana. The train route initially started here for transporting coal to different parts of Nizam state. Later they started passenger Express trains to Hyderabad, Balharshah, Vijayawada, Warangal etc.

Airport

New airport to be established by Government of Telangana in association with Airports Authority of India and identified land of 1,600 acres at punuguduchelaka near kothagudem.[4]

Sports

Kothagudem stadium is one of the oldest stadiums in the country. Eminent Cricket players of repute, viz.Mohammad Azharuddin, Arun Lal, Shivlal Yadav etc. played here through Ranji Trophy. The stadium also hosted several national tournaments including volleyball, Hockey, Kabbadi etc. under the aegis of Sports council of the state.

The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has developed the garden abutting a natural pond as part of its initiatives to promote greenery.

Places of interest

Bhadrachalam Temple, Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary, Thrimatha panchayatana Kshetram (Three Goddess Temple), only the first of its kind in India; Kinnerasani Dam, Nava Bharat Balaji Temple, Garimellapadu forests, Ganesh Temple, Wildlife sanctuary through the forests connecting Kothagudem and Palvancha,Ramalayam Temple etc., are notable places. Called Mini Birla Mandhir which is located at near by Navabharath Kothagudem Sri Venkateswara swamy Temple

Media and communications

Akashvani (radio broadcaster) is serviced through Hyderabad-B (South Regional Service) with frequency 100.1 with 1377kHZ. It also services Telugu-language radio. Aakashavani Kothagudem is expected to embrace the digital technology for improving its transmission quality and expanding its reach beyond the primary expected coverage area.[5]

Education

Kothagudem is regarded as the educational hub of Khammam district. There is a Kothagudem University College of Engineering, aliased Kothagudem School of mines, Kakatiya University, Only one of its kind in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Besides these schools, the town has one of the oldest Government Polytechnic colleges in the state and Industrial Training Institutes in the state. There are many popular schools in this town:
