KiRaKa (Pronounced: /ˈkɪrɑkɑ/, an acronym formed from "KInderRAdioKAnal") is a German radio station based in Cologne. It is a digital speciality channel of WDR, catering to children between the ages of 5 and 16.
Effective January 1 2016, KiRaKa broadcasts 24 hours a day via Cable, Satellite, DAB in Germany, and on the Internet. It simulcasts 7 days a week with WDR 5 between 19:05 and 20:00 daily and also between 14:05 and 15:00 on Sundays to broadcast an audio story or play.[1]
Regular children's programming ceases at 21:00 hours, following which the station plays music aimed at the 11 to 16 age group in a segment called "Nachteule" (Night Owls), which continues through until 6:00 hours when normal broadcasting recommences.
Reception
Previously, KiRaKa was broadcast as a slot within WDR 5's daily service. On 29 May 2009, KiRaKa took over the services formerly used by WDR 2 Klassik. Today, the service is available across Germany via the Astra satellite network, Cable and DAB Radio. It is also available internationally via the Internet and WDR's radio applications for smartphones and tablets.[2]
Awards
In September 2014, KiRaKa and another of WDR's radio stations, Funkhaus Europa, jointly won the award for Best Innovation at 2014 German Radio Awards.[3]
The award was given to the directors Tuba Tunçak and Mirjam von Jarzebowski for their collaboration in the production of "Kelebek im Konzert/Kelebek Konserde" (Kelebek in Concert). The project was intended to introduce children to music from other cultures, starting at school level. It resulted in a live concert hosted by one German and one Turkish presenter, during which a variety of Eastern and Western music, as well as a fusion of the two was played.
