Ketena Hulet Mulu Wongel church is an Evangelical and Pentecostal Ethiopian church located in the country's capital city of Addis Ababa. With tens of thousands of members, it is one of the largest mega churches in Africa.
History
Founded in early 20th century, Ketena Hulet Mulu Wongel is one of the first branches of the larger Mulu Wongel Ethiopian church. Unlike other Ethiopian Protestant churches, it was not founded by non-Ethiopian Christian denominations and it is the only indigenous Ethiopian Protestant church. Accordingly, it is not associated with any of the western based Protestant denominations.
Mulu Wongel is the third largest protestant church in Ethiopia, after the Kale Heywet Word of Life Church and Mekane Yesus churches. Ketena Hulet Mulu Wongel is the main branch of numerous Mulu Wongel churches found in Addis Ababa and nationwide. Over 5,000 Ethiopians regularly attend Sunday services in Ketena Hulet while the church has over 30,000 members. Since the financially poor Ketena Hulet church lacks the infrastructure to shelter all its members weekly, it uses several tents adjacent to its building for its worship programs. In one recent conference held by the church in Addis Ababa's main stadium, its members overflowed the whole stadium and used the football field to contain the worshipers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZuctBlPgMk&feature=related
Since the 1990s, the church began establishing bible schools and theology colleges to develop its leaders.
