Kaymu Pakistan is an online marketplace, providing C2C and B2C platform in Pakistan.[1] This e-commerce portal connects buyers and sellers to close deals on new and used items of various categories.
History
Initially launched as Azmalo.pk in January 2013,[2] Rocket Internet rebranded the company as Kaymu.pk in September 2013,[3] aligning the venture with the global company brand that currently spans 3 continents, Asia, Africa and Europe.[4] Kaymu Pakistan was initially managed by co-founder and managing director[5] Ahmed H. Khan[6] followed by the present co-founder and managing director Christian Schröder.[7] As of 2014 onwards, the venture is lead in Pakistan by country manager Mr. Adam Dawood.[8]
The idea behind the founding of Kaymu in Pakistan was to facilitate online buying and selling through a single platform.[1] At the time of Kaymu's launch in Pakistan, OLX was already operating in the country as an online classifieds website. The idea of a managed online marketplace that would be providing seller rating and facilitating buyers via cash on delivery[9] received good response from the local community. Kaymu Pakistan now serves as a platform that offers consumer to consumer (C2C) as well as business to consumer (B2C)[10] services across the country.
Kaymu launched mobile shopping apps[11] for Android,[12] Blackberry and Apple iOS devices in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Funding
In April 2014, Ooredoo, a Qatar-based Telecommunications Company (formerly known as QTel) joined hands with Rocket Internet.[13] The founding of APACIG resulted in additional funding from Ooredoo.[14]
Rocket Internet in Pakistan
The German internet company Rocket Internet took an initial step into Pakistan’s e-commerce sector with the establishment of Daraz.pk in July 2012.[15] Following a positive reception in Pakistan with its first e-commerce venture, Rocket Internet expanded its operations in Pakistan to over 30 active websites in 2015, the widest known being Kaymu.pk, Foodpanda.pk and Daraz.pk.[16] Online shopping trend started to rise in Pakistan in the beginning of 2010, however, just like other nations across the globe, Pakistanis did not show trust towards online payment,[17] which is why Kaymu adopted Cash on Delivery as payment method.
Marketplace Model
An apparent drawback Kaymu faces is the inability to gauge the quality of products listed by the sellers. Some of these products are illegally copied games and programs being listed as genuine copies.[18]
A Report on Pakistan's E-Commerce Trends
In June 2015, a comprehensive report[19] detailing out the e-commerce and online shopping trends in Pakistan from 2013 to the mid of 2015, was released. This statistical and graphical report[20] offered detailed insight into the consumer behavior and their approach towards online shopping. The key findings of the report[20] were:
- 70% of e-commerce activity involved males whereas 30% involved females.
- Karachi topped the list of yearly e-commerce activity in the country with 27% of the total traffic followed by Lahore with 17% and Islamabad/Rawalpindi with 14%.
- Technophiles topped the list of total e-commerce activity with 8% followed by movie lovers at 7% and music lovers at 6%.
- Electronics and mobile phones were the top products sold online.
- Conversion rate of returning visitors remained double than the first time visitors.
- Visitors who spent 0 to 10 seconds on e-commerce websites accounted for the highest percentage.
- Google Chrome remained the most popular internet browser with 58% of the total e-commerce visitors using it, followed by Mozilla Firefox with 17%.
- 13% of the total online customers preferred to buy from the website they experienced before whereas the rest 87% conducted online research and looked for package deals and special promotional offers.
