Kamptee(Marathi: कामठी) is a city and a municipal council in Nagpur district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the administrative center for Kamptee taluka. It is below the confluence of the Kanhan River with the rivers Pench and Kolar.

History

Kamptee was founded in 1821 when the British established a military cantonment on the banks of the Kanhan River. Kamptee was previously named Camp-T for its geographical shape. The town quickly became an important center for trade, but trade dwindled with the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century to Nagpur. An Iron Age hoard of weapons was excavated by Major George Pearse of the Royal Artillery from the Wurreegaon barrow near Kamptee in the mid-nineteenth century. Dating to between the 7th and 1st centuries BC, it was one of the first hoards from this period discovered in the Indian Sub-Continent.[1]

Geography

Kamptee is located at latitude 21°223' North, longitude 79°2' West. According to the 2001 census, it has an area of 40,706 hectares. National Highway No.7 passes through it. There are three bridges over the Kanhan river. One is a railway bridge, and the other, older bridge, is a road N.H.7 and a newer one small road that goes to Old Kamptee. There is one big water filter plant which supplies water to the larger area of Nagpur city.

Religion

Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs are well represented in Kampthi, with Buddhist, Hindus and Muslims being the majority. The religions are well represented with the NCI's Christ Church. There are nearly 40 mosques. There is the famous temple Ram-Mandir built in the 19th century. There is a Roman Catholic establishment of the Order of St. Francis de Sales, with a church and convent, several mosques, the Badi Masjid mosque being 130 years old and the Kolsatal Mosque being 100 years old and also more than 100 years old Shia Haidry Jama Masjid And Maula Ali (a.s) Dargah which is located in Husainabad. The Buddhists have the Dragon Palace Temple, symbol of world peace, built in 1999. Around 1,000,000 Buddhist people from all over the world gather at Dragon Palace once in a year.there is also a jain temple in kamptee which is arourd 1000 yr old which is full of sculpture and carving it is depicting ramyan and mahabharat .There is a very old church at cantonment area build in 1820 Immaculate Conception Church which is the oldest church in central India. There are many Christians family located around the Church.

Education and sport

There are ninety-four Anganwadi pre-primary schools, eighty government aided primary schools, and only one government funded high school. There are two tertiary colleges in Kamptee; the Seth Kesrimal Porwal College, established in 1965 with faculties of science, commerce and the arts, and the Smt Kishoritai Bhoyar College of Pharmacy. Also the Kamptee Polytechnic, which is situated behind the railway station. Kamptee has one of the biggest schools in the region Kendriya Vidyalaya Kamptee and Army Public School which caters mainly defence kids but civilian kids are also allowed. vidharb best school is also in kamptee Seth Ramnath Loiya High School. which has maintained 100 percent result from last five years

Kamptee has produced lot of Poets, Authors & scholars, in all the three main languages (Hindi, Marathi & Urdu). Mainly Urdu has produced lot of world class figure in the field of Shayeri.

Kamptee has a primary school in cantonment area named Cantonment Board Hindi Primary School. Which is a central government school. Providing good quality of education to children who can afford school fees.

Also in the cantonment area, there is a school named "School of Home Science", which was previously run by Shri Ramkrishna Samskriti Peeth, founded by Late Shri B.N. Sen & operated by Shri B.T. Adwani. The school has now been handed over to Ramkrishna Sarada Mission.

Kamptee also has a well recognised school named St. Joseph Convent, with actors like Sahabaz Khan as alumni. Kamptee also has the Rabbani High School and Junior College situated near Imli Bagh which had produced great like Dr.Kahlilullah, Dr.Sadique Ali, Engineer, Gauhar Ali Aslam. It has produced the politician like Shameem Faizee. It has now started computer certificate courses. St. Joseph convent is a 156-year-old institution. Kamptee also has the Indira High school and junior college founded by Late Shri Arjunlal Kastry.

MSBVEE, an autonomous body governed by the Maharashtra State Government, provides courses in Vocational Education in various streams. In a recently passed Government Regulation,(G.R. No. VOC-2012/591), Maharashtra Government recognizes MSBVE Certification as Equivalent of HSC and as “Alternate Qualification” to the ITI Courses. This will make the students doing the MSBVE class XII at par with other students of HSC to take admission to Graduation / Degree courses for any University in India and abroad.

In a 2nd government regulation, (G.R. No. VOC-2012/697). Maharashtra government has changed the certificate program from MSBVE to "MSBVEE Diploma" Rabbani ITI & Junior College is the first institute from Kamptee to be recognised by MSBVEE for running this course in the streams of 1. Mechanical Engineering 2. Electrician 3. Mechanic Motor Vehicle

This city also has a well recognised computer education center named Maxim computers near durga chowk has affiliated to many reputed organisation and Pronet near Phool Oli Masjid.

This city is having Football Fever and known to be as a Nursery of Football and largely recognized as a Football City in all parts of India. This City has produced lot of National and International Footballer, lot of Players from Kamptee represented India, Maharashtra & in all leading professional clubs of India.

Kamptee is having lot of Football Clubs prominent amongs are Rabbani Club, Young Iqbal Sporting Club & Nagpur FC representing Super Division of Nagpur District and Iqbal Club, Ansar Club and Eleven Star is representing in Senior Division. More than 50% of Footballer in Nagpur District is from Kamptee.

Medical

Kamptee has now well developed in medical field. The most experienced Doctors being Dr. Roy,Dr. H T Dipani, and Dr. Tajpuriya (All more than 30 Years of experience).There are ten big hospitals with more than 15 beds. Three government hospitals, one general Sub District hospital (50 bedded), one Military hospital and one Cantonment General hospital. Apart from Allopathic system of Medicine, Doctors of other system of medicine are also present. Late Dr. Moreshwar Dange was one of pioneer doctor in Homoeopathic system of medicine. Presently Homoeopathic Doctors are also successfully serving in Kamptee are Dr. Rajan Kalpande, Dr. Surendra Wankhede, Dr. Vivek Chandnani, Dr. Mahesh Mahajan are prominent amongst Homoeopathic Doctors. While city has many Ayurvedic and Unani Doctors, Late Hakim Noor Mohammad considered to be pioneer in Unani Medicine in Kamptee. There is one well equipped Diagnostic Point run by local M.D.(Pathology)& D.M.R.D. Radiologist having most advanced instruments in pathology,X-ray, Colour Doppler and Sonography. in the medical doctor is Dr Mohmmmed khaleelullah one of India's heart especialist is from kamptee

Military history

The 'raison d'être' for Kamptee, the military cantonment, is still operational. Kamptee Cantonment houses the Officers Training Academy for National Cadets Corps, which is the only one of its kind. It is also the home of one of the oldest and most respected regiments in the Indian Army, the Brigade of the Guards. The unit holds the distinction for winning two PVC's (Param Veer Chakra), the highest gallantry award bestowed upon soldiers for wartime operations. Other important units include the Institute of Military Law and a military hospital catering to service personnel. Kamptee's Army Postal Service Centre has been operational in the cantonment since 1948, providing training to personnel of the Department of Post who volunteer for army service.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Kamptee had a population of 98,340. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kamptee has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 72%. In Kamptee, 13% of the population is under six years of age.
