Raja Kalipada Singha Thakur was the last King of Malla dynasty of Bishnupur. He became King of Mallabhum in the year 1930 A.D.[2][3][4]
Early History
59th King of Mallabhum Maharaj Ramkrishna Singha Dev, had two wives, first one was Rani Dhwajamoni Devi, who had not any issue. Second wife of Ramkrishna Singha Dev was Rani Prasanna Kumari Devi, who had one daughter named, Indu Kumari Devi.[5] Indu Kumari Devi was married with Kumar Ananda Ballav Singha Thakur of Purakonda Zamindari, had a single son Kalipada Singha Thakur.[5] As Maharaj Ramkrishna Singha Dev had not any son, he adopted Nilmoni Singha Dev (Nilmoni was from same lineage of Malla Royal family.He was from the lineage of Nimai Singha Dev, 2nd Son of Maharaj Chaitanya Singha Dev) and crowned Nilmoni Singha Dev (1889 AD-1903 AD) as the 60th King of Malla dynasty.Maharaj Nilmoni and his Rani Churamoni Devi had a son, named Ramchandra who died in his early age.[5] So after the demise of Maharaj Nilmoni Singha Dev(1903 AD), his widow Rani Churamoni Devi look after the State from 1903 AD to 1930 AD.After that mother -in-law of Rani Churamoni Devi i.e. the 2nd wife of 59th King Maharaj Ramkrishna Singha Dev, Rani Prasanna Kumari devi, called his grand son( son of Indu Kumari Devi), Kalipada (1930 A.D. - 1983 A.D.)to Bishnupur and crowned him as the 61st King of Mallabhum through the traditional Rajyabhishek of Malla Royal Family.[3][4]
Personal life
Raja Kalipada Singha Thakur had two wives, first one Rani Shovana Sundori Devi, had two daughters, died at their early ages.Second wife was Rani Siromoni Subornomoyee Patta Mahadevi had four sons and three daughters. Sons are, Devendra Bijoy, Anil Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Salil Kumar.[2][1]
Contribution
Raja Kalipada Singha Thakur was the last titular Raja of Bishnupur Raj.At his time His estate, Bishnupur was decimated into a small Zamindari. So he had not that kind of kingdom but the glamour, aristrocacy and the gravity was always in him. In 1942, he ignored the verdict of District Magistrate and performed the ritual firing of canon during Mahastami of Durgapuja.[6][7]In 1969, Raja Kalipada Singha Thakur contested Legislative Assembly Election of West Bengal from Vishnupur constituency as a candidate of Bharatiya Jana Sangh( Later re-formed as Bharatiya Janata Party, commonly known as BJP), which he was defeated by the candidate of Bangla Congress.[8] At his time maximum temple of Bishnupur was acquisitioned by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).Raja Kali Pada Singha Thakur died on 29 December 1983.[2][9]
